Social Stratification: A system by which a society ranks categories of people in social hierarchy.
IT IS A TRAIT OF SOCIETY
DOES NOT REFLECT INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES, BUT SOCIETY’S STRUCTURE
IT PERSISTS OVER GENERATIONS
SOCIAL MOBILITY HAPPENS SLOWLY
IT IS – UNIVERSAL while universal, it varies in type.
IT INVOLVES INEQUALITY IN BELIEF SYSTEM
-Ideologies justify existence of stratification.

CASTE SYSTEMS: Social Stratification based on ascription. BIRTH DETERMINES SOCIAL POSITION IN FOUR DISTINCT WAYS
Occupations
Endogamy is practiced
Social life is restricted
Belief systems are often tied to religious dogma
LACK OF MOBILITY

GENDER=THE ATTITUDES, BELIEFS, AND BEHAVIORS WE ASSOCIATE WITH MASCULINITY AND FEMINITY.

THE SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION OF GENDER:

Gender roles: expectations regarding proper behavior, attitudes, and activities of males and females
Evident in work and in how we react to others
Most people do not display strictly “masculine” or “feminine” qualities all the time

IS GENDER SOCIAL OR BIOLOGICAL?
Margaret Mead studied gender in three New Guinea societies:
Among the Arapesh, both sexes would be described by U.S. citizens as FEMININE.
Among the Mundugumor, both sexes would be described by U.S. citizens as MASCULINE.
Among the Tchambuli, gender roles REVERSE U.S STANDARDS PROVE THAT GENDER DOES VARY ACROSS CULTURES.
Mead concluded that these cases studies prove that gender does vary among cultures.
Critics charge that Mead oversimplified.
