Social Categories
In order for me to say what social category I identify with then I would like to define social category. Social category is a group of people who do not interact with each other but share similar characteristics. I actually identify with many social categories. The main one would be my race because I am African American. I also identify with those who have tattoos, piercings, and last I am a woman. The two most important categories to me would be the fact that I am African American and I am a woman.
As we all know African Americans had a bad history. There has always been a time when we were looked down on mainly due to the color of our skin. We never got the opportunities that other races may have gotten and it was a struggle to deal with. We have been judged in so many different ways and categorized just based on experiences that people had with other African Americans. We are all human and should not be judge based on the color of our skin but because who we are as individuals and what we stand for.
Way back in history is when I think that African Americans had it the worst. They were slaves and it was so segregated. They were not allowed in certain restaurants, in fact majority of them were “white only” restaurants. There were separate restrooms, schools, churches and stores. African Americans had to sit on the back of the bus and if a white person came on the bus and needed a seat the blacks were forced to give theirs up. One major thing was slavery because it took a long time for it to end and they were beaten for not doing what they should have. African Americans had to cook, clean, take care of the whites children, and also pick cotton. When they picked cotton they would be out from sunrise to sunset in the hot sun and many of them eventually had back backs from bending over so much. Some of the white men even had sex with the black women. African Americans faced so many problems back in history that many people would not have been able to survive.

For black people in the 1920s the experience was cruel and horrible that we dared to think of it happening today. After slavery was abolished in the nineteenth century there were more black people that white people so the white people needed to control the black people after fearing that the black people would take over the USA. So the white government at the time set up new laws and regulations to control the freedom of black people. Some laws were that black people couldn’t vote, they weren’t allowed good jobs that were highly paid and no education that would have been useful to them. This meant that most black people suffered greatly in poverty in the twentieth century.…

In modern times the thought that black people should continue to be judged by their looks and seen as less of a human being is very real. Black people are seen as a threat by simply existing and are being controlled by the rules and laws that were set into place after slavery “ended.” In order to preserve white privilege and power, black and brown people have been denied the ability, more times than not, to succeed and bring…

Throughout American history, there have been many problems. Racism and slavery are two of those problems. Racism and slavery have existed ever since our nation was started and have created countless stereotypes about African American men. One stereotype, which began during the times of slavery, was that every black man wanted to rape a white woman. That racist stereotype continued long after the civil war had taken place. For example, in 1931 a group of young African American men was accused of rape. These young men were called the Scottsboro boys. This case had a big impact on American history. The case caused American's to look at the racist views they held since times of slavery. Although the case created extreme conflict, it ultimately…

They were denied even some of the most basic and taken for granted citizenship rights, and were subject to cruel things. It took quite a few amendments and laws to get them to a point even remotely close to the level of a caucasian person. Even after they were raised that high and had protections, they were harassed and their rights were undermined even time it was even remotely possible for it to happen. It was not even just in the South, although not as harsh as the South, the North still discriminated greatly against the former slaves of the Nation. Nothing that was given to them was ever enforced, and often times the American government would ignore or avoid the subject. They were not able to vote, first because of black codes and then because of qualifications. To make matters even worse, qualifications were never the same and could not be studied for. The person working at that time decided how hard or easy a test would be. It could be as bad as recite the entire Constitution for those that the person did not know or wanted to keep out, to recite the abc’s or something simple along those lines for those that the worker did not want to impede or knew. They could not pursue their goals in life, only certain companies and employers would hire former slaves, and these were usually people hiring for domestic, hard, or unwanted jobs. The employer also discriminated…

Americans should realize the magnitude of slavery's consequences on African Americans as a whole. Blacks were brainwashed and stripped of self-esteem and taught to be ashamed of dark color of their skin. Many African Americans have effortlessly tried to advocate "Black Pride", trying to re-instill self-worth and being proud of our distinct facial and body features, and darker complexions. African Americans had zilch to begin with after the abolishment of slavery in 1865. Slaves were promised a "mule/ and 40 acres" and they didn't live to receive it nor did generations to follow; because the American government has yet to live up to its word. The fruit of the slaves' labor was stolen from the "land of the free". The victims of the White people's African slave trade never experienced such freedom. This race deserves compensation for the mistreatment…

African Americans are poorly treated, they are stereotyped, and they are also human beings. First of all they were poorly treated because of their color. Many people also treat African Americans poorly because of history. Second of all African Americans are also stereotyped. We as people stereotype everyone and everything, but African Americans get stereotyped a lot. When they are stereotyped they get categorized. For an example, when we see an African American we think that they are bad people; like gang members, hoodlums, and uneducated. That is what people think and that is what they believe, but it not true. That is just stereotyping and it is not right, but on some case stereotyping is a good thing if it is a positive image or thought. African Americans are also human being they breath, eat, sleep, and do all the same thing white people do. So they are no different than I am. The have a lot of similarities and…

A social category that I mostly fit in would be my religion, which is a Coptic Orthodox Christian. Frequently, I characterize my friends, family, and myself as being inside this social category because of our beliefs towards our religion. Concerning my religion, every Sunday there is a youth meeting that I attend that focuses on the meaning of being a Coptic Orthodox Christian. Going to these meetings and listening to the discussions opened up my mind on how much my religion means to me. Membership to my religion would be considering me a “servant” to my church. Being a servant means that you would have to help out around the church, volunteer during events, and attend classes that will help you become a better servant. Honestly, my connection…

Danitza, thank you for your post his week. I feel that African Americans did not receive a fair shake when the social work program started. There were many things that could and should have been did differently back then to help everyone. However, we the people are not responsible for their decisions and actions then all we can do now is learn from the mistakes and move forward in a positive manner. There is no life better than another one in my opinion. If people would all feel this way things in this world would be a lot better. Everyone needs to stop dividing themselves with race, religion, and gender. We are all human no matter what. Moreover, in the past African Americans were not treated fairly, but I do feel now that everyone in the…
