Smokey The Bear Poem Analysis
Poets often use figurative language and imagery to appeal to the readers five senses and express an idea. Author Billy Collins use figurative language and imagery in the poem Flames to express an idea or thought. Billy Collins has used Imagery in Flames to show an idea or a thought he has had. Smokey The Bear is walking in the woods with a gas can and some matches. “Hat cocked at a disturbing angle”(line5). This is imagery because it makes the reader visually see Smokey The Bear. When you see this type of imagery it alters the reader's perspective of the poem to think something is not correct. Smokey The Bear is tired of warning the careless about forest fires. He is walking in the woods with a gas can and matches. “ How a Professional does it”(line 17). This is imagery because it uses the sense of sight. When it says how a professional does it visually the reader sees a professional setting a record. In the poem the author is describing how big Smokey The Bear hands are. “His paws are the size of catcher's mitts”(line 10). This is figurative language because it is a metaphor. It is comparing two objects without using like or as. The author uses this metaphor to emphasize to the reader the size of Smokey The Bear. After the reader is inferring that Smokey The Bear is about to set the forest on fire. “He is going to show them how a professional does it”(line 17).This is personification because it gives human characteristics to a non human object. The author uses this personification to make the reader see how huge this forest fire is going to be.
