Skin and Natural Beauty
All’s Fair in Vietnam
1. What is your opinion about the topic that has been discussed in this short story?
In my opinion about the topics that has been discussed in this short story is the stories that tell us about people in Vietnam are obsessed with beauty. It has been founded when she came to Vietnam and everyone looked at her face, there are some who asked her, 'how much for your skin'. That person asked that question because her skin really beautiful. If I were in her place, I felt scared because everybody gesture towards me and I felt uncomfortable with that situation. Other than that, in Vietnam, girls spent more money to protect their skin.

2. Do you think the writer enjoys having white complexion?
Yes because she has a natural beauty, luminous white, and she becomes the focus of the girls there. Female Vietnam they are very particular about their skin care but they are willing to spend money to protect the skin. The writer feels happy because she has a natural beauty and does not need surgery to look beautiful. In fact they will do anything to solve the problem by protecting themselves from UV rays. Actually, everyone have natural beauty inside of their self. For me, we must be grateful for the blessed that we have because the real beauty comes from inside.

3. What do you understand from the phrase ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder means that different people will find different things beautiful and that the differences of opinion don't matter greatly. For me, beauty is very subjective. Everyone have their own natural beauty and does not need to do plastic surgery to look beautiful and better than others. Beauty ourselves too often the focus of other people and they have their own opinion about ourselves. Last but not least, we do not act with the beauty that we have because it is not immortal but it can be lost in an instant if we are not grateful for the blessings we can.

The common physical beauty is what Elaine Scarry called “a symmetry of everyone’s relation to one another” in her book called On Beauty and Being Just (1999). This means that beautiful subjects or objects are evenly proportioned and ideal in all their forms. In other words, if symmetry is perfection, then beauty is perfection too. At the same time, as absolute symmetry does not exist- beauty is a divine feature of “chosen”. Meanwhile, I have my own interpretation of physical beauty. This is the idea of beauty that is not just a physical appearance of a person or object. This is the universal “beauty” I was talking about in the introduction of the paper. In my opinion, physical beauty that relates to the beauty of objects or subjects…

A very different view of beauty came from Immanuel Kant, an 18th century German philosopher whose work sparked changes in many fields including aesthetics. He holds our mental faculty of reason in high regard and believes that it is our reason that fills the world we experience with structure. He argues that it is our capability of judgment enables us to have experience of beauty and grasp those experiences as part of an ordered, natural world with purpose. (Douglas…

The setting takes place in the 1940’s where beauty depended on the wealth and physical traits of an individual. During this time period racial discrimination against African-Americans was tremendous. The middle class and the lower class black community were divided. For example; Maureen Peal as considered as the privileged division of the black society. The less privileged were the Macteer’s and the Breedlove’s. Morrison writes, “I am cute! And you ugly! Black and ugly” (73). This quote reveals the importance of how the setting determines whether a person’s beautiful based solely on their skin tone. Being that Maureen Peal’s a light skinned middleclass girl she thinks her lighter skin makes her look more white, beautiful, and more superior over the darker girls.…

    Beauty Is Subjective

It is often said that "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and this goes to prove that beauty is highly subjective. We all obviously have different tastes. What appears beautiful to one person may seem ugly or not so beautiful to another. It is the person who is looking (the beholder) who has to form his or her own opinion whether a particular person, place or object is beautiful. Many literary researchers believe that Margaret Wolfe Hungerford (née Hamilton), who wrote prolifically under the pseudonym 'The Duchess' was the first person ever to write "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". In her book Molly Bawn written in 1878, the line "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” appears for the first time in print.…

Beauty is all around us. It is in everything we do and see. What one may view as beautiful another may disagree. It all depends on the person and the insight they have and the things around them. Beauty has many different elements and functions. Dictionar.com states “the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations (as shape, color, sound, etc.), a meaningful design or pattern, or something else (as a personality in which high spiritual qualities are manifest).” Merriam-websters.com says “the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit.” And last but not least thefreedictionary.com says “The quality that gives pleasure to the mind or senses and is associated with such properties as harmony of form or color, excellence of artistry, truthfulness, and originality.” Let’s take a look inside the eye of the beholder.…

Is your skin the color of caramel or cream? Do you care a lot about looking tanned and healthy, or white and clean? Let’s forget the cliché that beauty is skin deep. In reality, regardless of our age or sex, humans love to judge people by their skin color. Two thousand years ago, Greek and Roman women used lead paint and chalk to lighten their skin. In Asia, women swallowed ground pearls to achieve the same effect. Right now, whitening products line beauty shelves, and advertisements bombard us with models having the finest skin tones. All for what? To look more attractive in the beholders’ eye and to live up to the beauty standards of society.…

Simply put, Beauty is considered many different things to many different people. There are many ways to judge beauty in this world, probably more than there are people in the world. However, if we were to try and categorize “beauty” we would identify that there are two kinds of beauty:outer beauty and inner beauty.…

Have you ever looked in the mirror, and never seemed to see yourself as what you consider “beautiful”? A person is not always considered beautiful for their physical appearance, but for how they truly are from inside. The song “Natural Beauty” from Immortal Technique is a song that gives a message to all the people out there who feel insecure about themselves. It shows that you just need to be yourself and everything will go smooth, because if you don’t find yourself beautiful, then it would give you a harder time to socialize with friends and you would have the feeling of being uncomfterable. A literary device that the song “Natural Beauty” has is metaphor, for the fact that all the artist is singing is making a direct comparison with a person’s natural beauty and with someone’s who is fake, as in plastic surgery, or would try to imitate to be someone else who isn’t them.…
