CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background
Sentence, either it is simple or complex sentences, are always containaining at least one verb. Sentence is now lately called clause. Futhermore, a clause that consits of one verb is called simple clause and a clause that consits of more than one verb is called complex clause. To complete the meaning of a sentence, the elements object (consists of noun or noun pharase), complement, and adjunct (place) should be added because some verbs needs complementations to make the clause makes sense. However, there are some verbs that do not need complementations since the verbs are intransitive verbs. 1.2 Topic
The paper topic is about complementations on simple clauses. 1.3 Data Soure
The data source was taken from internet that is a short story. The title of the short story is ‘Thumbelina’. 1.4 Aim
The aims of this paper is to look for some examples from any literary genres or mass media, which is, in this paper is a short story. Each example consists of at least three examples. 1.5 Significance
There are some significances that are expected from this paper, such as the improvement of English skill, especially in grammar, due to the writing of this paper. Moreover, problemes that are found while writing or looking the examples can be solved. 1.6 Problem
There are some problems that are found during the writing of this paper, for example, it is hard enough to find the examples of every clause types in newspaper articles. If the short articles are used, it is possible to use more than one article. Therefore, short story was chosen because it is easier to find the examples of the seven clause types. Moreover, during the searching process of examples, it is quite hard to distinguish between object and complement. However, the problem is solved due to the process since there are many examples that clearly show the difference between them. 1.7 Scope and Limitation
The scope of this paper is limited about
