“Take This Fish and Look at it*” by Samuel H. Scudder is the most compelling essay for this week’s reading assignment because the author wrote in an organized, laughable tone; therefore, allowing its audience to perceive the lesson as the professor intended it to be learned. Likewise, Scudder used three different apparent modes in his essay, these include: comparison / contrast, narrative, and description. I particularly liked this essay because it relates to the great significance that in every scenario, even writing, that things can be overlooked and need to be re-examined to find better, more sufficient details. Scudder also uses humor throughout his narrative, which compared to some essays, is quite enjoyable. Overall, every individual…

Anecdotes a word your average [person would no know the meaning of. An anecdote—a short story or narrative usually used to a humorous effect—is used to a different effect in this –prestigious and insightful—paper of Woolf’s. All through the paper she utilizes anecdotes; such as “[s]he had only to move that pen left to right—from ten o’clock to one. Then it occurred to her to do what is simple and cheap enough after all – to slip a few of those pages into an envelope, fix a penny stamp in the corner and drop the envelope into the red box…” using these anecdotes she lets her audience see that she had experienced every “phantom and obstacle” through her inquiring piece of work; which established credibility and for her audience – believed to be the men of the world – to see and feel what it is like to experience the “phantom and obstacles” a woman experiences.…

Sample Essay One In the story “Yellow Fish,” the main character is never directly described or mentioned. The reader must inference everything except their name, Anu. The author creates the character through reflections and other various techniques. Throughout the story, the writer uses very choppy sentences, as well as fragments, to represent Anu’s stream of consciousness. By doing this, the writer gives her a timid, scarred personality. By limiting the sentence structure, Ambai indirectly leads the reader to believe that Anu is depressed, and has faced tragedy in her life. The author does this to foreshadow the reflection on Anu’s loss of her child. The reflection itself also serves purpose to the author. Anu says, “The mouth of the urn.…
