Who invented the airplane? The Wright brothers. Even if people know the names of the Wright brothers, Wilbur, and Orville, they still call them “the Wright brothers”! Why? Was it because of various similarities between them? Are there a lot of similarities between them? I’ll tell you some similarities and differences between them, and you can decide for yourself.
I’ll begin by talking about their family lives. As children, they fought and teased each other, as many brothers do. Wilbur was four years older than Orville and treated him like a child until they were both adults. Both Wilbur and Orville were interested in mechanical devices and how they worked. They were especially invented in new inventions. They were “curious and loved to learn”, but disliked organized, classroom-style learning. They liked studying subjects of their choice better.
Wilbur was an introvert; he was shy on the outside, but he was always thinking on the inside. He had a sharp, active mind that was “always exploring questions and seeking answers”. He was “visionary”, but “prone to depression”. Orville had a more open personality though he, too could be called an introvert. He was a mischievous prankster though he didn’t do anything horribly wrong. He found many ways to earn money as a child, by selling anything from scrap metal to homemade kites.
Incidentally, both Wilbur and Orville didn’t go to college or receive a high school diploma. The Wrights moved just before Wilbur would’ve gotten his diploma, and Wilbur didn’t bother to go back to claim it. Orville thought about going to college and took special classes during his last year of high school instead of the classes required for graduation. So he didn’t get a diploma
