The Importance of Signing Out with CQ
SPC Vereen

The importance of signing out with CQ is a simple task but yet most would find this task annoying. A prime example would be myself, as I normally do not sign out in the “CQ sign-out log.” My reason for this was at one point that I would never leave the barracks with a battle buddy so I would think I would get in trouble for leaving without a battle buddy partner. I know that the battle buddy system is not mandatory but yet recommended as a safety precaution for soldiers well being but I forget. Anyone can be a battle buddy. This includes civilians, family members, and also the 3rd party nationalist and there for I have neglected the use of the sign-out roster located at my CQ desk. Signing out of CQ lets the leader ship know when you’re out of the barracks and a

A perfect example would be my incident that occurred on the 10th of August 2010. I was intoxicated off post last night and did not return till approximately 0830 in the morning thus missing accountability formation. Accountability formations are use to conform the status of a units soldier that are in attendance, on vacation (leave), sick call, or missing in action (aka Failing to Report to duty (FTR)), and possible AWOL (absent without leave). Because I missed the formation I was thus for unaccounted for and failed to report for duty. Because I did not sign out the CQ book at the CQ desk, no one knew my location and I could have considered missing, possibly injured, and/or dead. Since my phone was off there was no way of contacting me to notify my superiors’ of my where about. The purpose and true importance is to track the location of a unit’s soldier and be able to reach them in the event of an emergency. An emergency of such importance such as a alert where there is a limited time to load gear, initiate communication

CQ, also known as “Charge of Quarters”, is one of the jobs that’s included in being a member of the armed forces. CQ is “supposedly” a 24 hour shift, consisting of a low ranking NCO and a few lower enlisted soldiers, during which the selected soldiers are to guard the Soldiers’ Quarters/Barracks. The job description includes maintaining the barracks (mopping/taking out trash/etc) to keeping an eye out on the Soldiers (making sure they aren’t doing anything illegal) and other deplorable tasks. While on duty Soldiers are expected to not sleep until their shift is finished, meaning they must vigilantly stay awake for over 24 hours (they still have to get up the same time as everyone else and do their mandatory physical training now). All enlisted soldiers have dealt with this tasking multiple times throughout their career, with each and every one having their own opinions. Many can agree that this is one of the worst ideas the Army has came up with and should be abolished or changed, whilst others say this is an important and necessary task that shouldn’t be altered.…

On-the-Spot Corrections. One of the most effective administrative corrective measures is on-the-spot correction. Use this tool for making the quickest and often most effective corrections to deficiencies in training or standards. Generally there is one of two reasons a soldier requires an on-the spot correction. Either the soldier you are correcting does not know what the standard is or does not care what the standard is. If the soldier was aware of the standard but chose not to adhere to it, this may indicate a larger…

Formations in the military are a very important part of keeping the structure an order that the military has. The importance and purpose of formations in the military is to help keep all solider and leaders safe and aware at all time. Formations in the military are essential in keeping track of where every soldier is at all times. Because of formation a soldiers leadership can track and can stay aware of what a solider is doing and where they are at all times of the duty day. If a soldier has an appointment it is vital that the squad leader know so if or when it is time for a formation, and the squad leader has to report to the platoon sergeant where his or her soldier is he needs to know so the platoon sergeant cant know why his count is the way is short of the platoon total. Formations in the military help soldiers and leaders to keep track of where their people and equipment are. Due to the fact the military uses formations it makes it easier for leadership to keep track of weapons. For example if the platoon sergeant need to get a count of weapons he has with him in the field with him during a training exercise all he has to do is hold a formation, and when all soldiers are present and accounted for he can either have a weapons count or walk thru with his list of weapons, serial numbers and the person in which they are assigned to. This way he is able to check who has their correct or incorrect weapon, and or which weapons are missing from the formation. The same goes for equipment thru the use of a formation the leadership is able to track where his soldiers are which solider has what piece of equipment and what piece of equipment is missing and or lost. With the use of formations all lost and or misplaced equipment can be identified an thru this action a proper search will be conducted. Formations in the military are vital in making sure that all soldiers are safe and are where they need to be at all times.…

Dictionary.com gives the following definition of reporting: an account or statement describing in detail an event, situation, or the like, usually as the result of observation, inquiry, etc..In the United States Army Reporting is one of the most important actions a soldier can display. Reporting is used to keep track of a soldiers location and or activities. Without some form of reporting, it would be impossible to monitor the actions or location of any given soldier. In a garrison environment, there are many reasons and situations, in which someone in a soldiers team would need to know where or what a soldier is doing. For instance, with our unit we dispatch trucks every Thursday for the following week. The order to dispatch a truck is given from the platoon sergeant and passed down through the ranks to the individual who is to dispatch the truck. if the soldier who is suppose to dispatch the truck fails to report to his command on the progress of the order given, then the command has no idea as to whether or not the truck was dispatched, if there is an issue dispatching the truck or if something is wrong with the dispatch. Reporting is also used in when inventorying equipment such as; weapons, nods, sights and optics, magazines, ammunition and other sensitive items of high value. During an arms room inventory, a lieutenant comes in with a check list of all items that should be in the arms room. He goes through the rifles, pistols and machine guns carefully reading each and every serial number making sure not to miss even one number. If a weapon has an attachment such as an optic, the optics serial number is also read . he or she then proceeds to mark the serial numbers called off keeping a record of every item. In the event the item is not on his or her list, he or she will write it into keep track of that item. After he or she is satisfied that all items are accounted for, he or she will take his or her list to the commanding officer for final…

Accountability’s physical definition is the responsibility to someone or for some activity. Accountability is important because it allows you to know where a person is at all times. We also use accountability to keep track of different items in the army, in tech supply we use hand receipts as a source to stay accountable for items that we give to soldiers. The army also uses formations as a way to have accountability of the soldiers in a particular unit or company and or brigade. It’s important to be accounted for no matter if you’re part of a formation or some type of business. Being accounted for let’s that persons accounted know that he/she is at his point of place and time. To be accounted for allows the person to be somewhere else other than his point of duty, knowing that his command knows of his whereabouts and his status. One likes to believe that being on time is being late, but being early is being on time. The importance of being on time when getting accounted for shows how responsible you are instead of showing up late an getting in trouble. Being accounted for shows your command that you know how to manage yourself and your time this can probably help you get promoted and move up the ranks, because of being a responsible person your command might entrust you to handle more important events or tasks with relief that they can rely on you to be there to get the job done.…

Accountability in the army is important because soldiers as well as equipment, ammunition, food, water and other various supplies are vital to the operation and proper function of the army as a whole. To start with, soldiers must be accounted for because they are the responsibility of their team leader, squad leader, platoon sergeant, and so on. If you don't have accountability of soldiers then when you attempt to conduct a mission you may not have all the soldiers you should have and that could cost you not only failing your mission but your life and the lives of the soldiers with you. Having accountability of each and every soldier at all times lets the leadership know how many soldiers they can spare for various details and still continue with the mission at hand. Another thing that is very important to keep accountability on is equipment. If your soldiers don't have the equipment they need or the equipment they were issued then it could cause a major problem in the mission possibly causing you to fail the mission and lose lives of your soldiers for not having proper equipment. Not only is accountability of equipment highly important but making sure all the equipment works how it is designed and intended to be used. Accountability of ammunition is important as well, if you are on a mission and not all of your soldiers have ammunition then it could cost the mission and lives. Keeping accountability of your soldiers, your soldiers equipment status, and ammunition status are very important to completing a mission successfully without any problems. Also keeping track of soldiers equipment as well as ammunition can help save the army funds to put to better use to help soldiers with retirement, their benefits, various programs and classes. Another thing in the army to keep accountability on is food, it is the most important thing to accomplishing a mission successfully. If a soldier hasn't been able to eat for days because leaderships lack of accountability of food it…

All this kind of touches the translation of accountability that the Unites States Army has adopted to be one of the most scrutinized daily aspects of life. Just as early philosophers spoke of money handlers as being “accountable” for the money, soldiers are accountable for their actions. Another example of the adaptation of the term would be morning formation time, when accountability takes place. All soldiers are accountable for the expectation to be at their assigned area at that time.…
