Should Dress Codes Be Outlawed In Schools?
Many of girls outfits and clothes are sexualized by dress codes. Boys are never told that their shoulders, legs,or stomachs are distracting or inappropriate. Clothing items such as leggings are outlawed by schools because they are seen as distracting to boys. Ripped Jeans are another violation of the dress code. Rips showing a small amount of skin on your knee vs. showing your whole knee and lower leg (how scandalous) in the shorts you change into. ”It is the responsibility of the administration to see that student dress is not extreme to the point of creating a disruption in the educational atmosphere”. (Planner) Administration uses their own personal opinions to decide what is appropriate and immodest. The opinion of 700 students should be weighted into account before people of an older generation decide what is modest, appropriate, and distracting for students. Legging are one of …show more content…
Shorts, which are not a violation of the dress code, show the majority of your leg. The planner state's,”Shorts and skirts must be mid-thigh length. If a garment contains a split or slit, the split or slit cannot be higher than the mid thigh.” Students can wear shorts and skirts that expose their leg as long they do not go above the mid thigh. Rips in the jeans only show a portion of the skin, and yet violate the dress code. If students can wear a skirt with a slit up to their mid thigh, they should be able to wear jeans with rips up to the mid -thigh. Not all violations all the dress code are bad. Dress codes banning articles of clothing the refer to drugs, weapons, alcoholic drinks, sex, and others that support profanity violence or illegal substances should be banned for the school environment. Shorts and skirts that are excessively short are understandably also violating the dress code. Clothes that drag on the ground are prohibited for safety reasons. People could step on the fabric dragging and cause the other person to

The first reason the dress code is is bad is because the rules are ridiculous. The school system makes horrible rules for students, like girls not being able to show their shoulders. There is nothing wrong with a shoulder as long as the shirt does not go down too far to show anything, also not being able to show their bra strap. Everyone knows that most girls in high school wear bras. People make a big deal about girls wearing “spaghetti straps” because it is too revealing to the girl's shoulders. In the spring…

The purpose of the dress code is to have a better understanding that students do not come here to show off their style, but to come here to learn and get a better education. Students fail to realize the difference between dressing for success and dressing to impress. Dress code is nothing new to our society; many jobs require you to wear certain types of clothing or a uniform. Therefore, these schools are simply preparing their students to have a successful and bright future. Students should be more concerned about what they can learn, not what they can or cannot wear. Education is what motivates student’s people to the top of the platform their wardrobe. “Be careless in your dress if you will, but keep a tidy soul (Twain)”. Students should beware, their future will not depend on…

I strongly disagree with the fact of the shorts dress code rule being 6 inches or mid-thigh because if your shorts are 6 inches and not mid-thigh you can be dress coded; also if you shorts are mid-thigh and not 6 inches you can again be dress coded. I believe it is unfair because it gets to the point of you not knowing if the shorts are in dress code that you have to wear jeans all year even when its 100 degrees out side. It is also very inconsistent with people getting dress coded and people getting warnings and not being sent in to be dress coded. I personally agree that students should not be wearing booty shorts to school because it is very inappropriate and not expectable, but I do not agree with the fact that some people get dress coded due to the fact that their teacher or a staff member is in a bad mood on day and the next time they wear the same shorts they don’t! In a way the issue can not be fixed but it can be discussed and more consistent. The fact that it can be one 6 inches or the other mid-thigh is logically not fair due to the fact that you do not know what one it has to be. Also you can only be dress coded a certain amount of times until there is extreme consequences. So you do not want to risk the fact of wearing shorts that you don’t know will be in dress code or will not be, and you just wear jeans even though it is extremely hot out side and you risk having a heat stroke. Therefore those are some reasons why the dress code rule for shorts which is 6 inches or mid-thigh is unfair and should be discussed. Even if the rule can not be entirely fixed whether you get dress coded or not, the fact of having the term “6 inches or mid-thigh” should be fixed so girls will know what they can go out and look for to wear to school because its not fair to go out and buy new shorts for school, then you figure out that they are out of dress code because they are not either 6…

I understand that school is a place for education and you should dress modest and you shouldn’t show up with your private parts coming out of your clothes, but women should have just as much amount of rights to wear what they please as men do. Equal rights should be practiced in every single school district, and boys should be disciplined just as harsh as girls are(for example when their pants hang so low you can see their underwear)(or when their muscle shirts cut so wide on the side that you can see their niple). Continuing to treat women like they should always cover up and be ashamed of their body can affect them in a negative way, mentally and even…

Dress codes are rules that the country has utilized for years. But are these rules necessary? They often suppress students’ individuality as well as students’ self-expression. At the same time these rules also discriminate and needlessly sexualize young women. Dress codes were put in place to establish a distraction-free environment for students. And yet, they are doing the opposite, and thus, modifying or eliminating them would be most logical.…

When schools have dress codes they usually have dress codes for boys and girls. But the dress codes for girls are always much more strict. The dress codes for girls are usually no leggings or sweatpants, tank tops, shorts, undergarments showing, or skirts that are shorter than fingertip length. But for boys for boys the dress codes are something like no baggy pants or inappropriate shirts. And most of the time they don’t get into much trouble for wearing something against the dress code like girls do.…

School uniforms should be used in the United states instead of dress codes. For many students in the United States, meeting dress code standards is a daily concern. Schools often ban things like jeans with holes,or leggings, but these clothes are in style, so they make up the majority of what students can find at a reasonable price. Rules often give very vague descriptions of clothing that is banned, causing dress codes violation to differ from teacher to teacher based on their opinions.…

Dress codes are sexist to both genders. Some schools don’t allow boys to grow out their hair or wear shorter shorts because it is too “girly”. This limits their freedom of expression and keeps them shut-in about their true selves. We cannot allow this to happen because what are these students going to do if they can’t see who they are? Will they live this lie that school taught them to be? Or, will they be able to overcome…

Greg Hardesty says that, “the girl raised her hand in English class. She had a question. What she got instead was a one-way trip to the main office – and an unexpected appointment with the administrator in charge of discipline. That’s because when the freshman at Trabuco Hills High School raised her hand, the motion exposed about 2 inches of her bare midriff. Boom! Dress code violation. Luckily for her, she got off with a warning. But throughout middle school and high school in Mission Viejo, this student repeatedly got busted for what she considered to be minor dress-code violations. Shorts too short. Shoulder straps on her top too thin. Skirt exposing too much skin above her knees. The violations cost her a couple of Saturdays for in-house school detention.” Now a-days with dress codes it seems that young ladies can not get a break from getting in trouble. With anything they wear they feel as if they could be punished. Finding the right attire to fit school dress code is a hassle and it is a lot of work to do. All of the clothes in stores usually consist of holes, short shorts, crop tops, tank tops, etc. and women have to attempt to find school appropriate clothes so they avoid getting into trouble. Unfortunately they still do, even if it is just their shirt coming up by accident when they are raising their…
