Shoteka Monologue
“Shoteka! Get down from there!” My mother yelled to me, but I wasn’t listening. You can’t really blame me, I was five, and too busy trying not to fall out of the tree I was climbing. Up I climbed, trying to get to the top, everyone had said it was impossible. I was going to prove them wrong.

I was weaving baskets with my cousins and Aunts when the hunters had come back and along with them, my father, Akocha. I ran to greet him.
“Father, your back!” I yelled and hugged him. He patted my shoulder before walking away and talking to another hunter. I sigh as I walk back to my Aunts and cousins. “Can we play hide and find?” she asks.
“Of course we can,” I say. “I’ll count. One...two...three…” I can hear her footsteps getting further and further away till… “Twenty!” I yell and run to go find her. “Where are you, Lushanya,” I say in a taunting tone, “I’m coming to get you.” I suddenly hear a rustle in the bushes. A smirk played on my lips as I crept closer to the bush, being as quiet as possible. “Boo!” I yelled as I jumped on to the bush, falling on top of Lushanya.
“Aahh!” She screamed as I landed. Soon enough we were rolling around

When the carriage stopped in front of the townhouse, Boudreaux bid us a good night, and informed us, I felt more for me, than Louis, that he was leaving first thing next morning and traveling to his plantation to oversee the planting. We wished him well and parted ways. I felt Boudreaux’s eyes on me as we walked inside. After we went inside, Louis said that he wished he had told Ransom that he was leaving within the week and going back to Barbados; the unrest there was threatening the cane crop. Although I would miss my husband, I breathed a sigh of relief that he would not be home long and that he had not told Boudreau.…

even witty. Smelled like cigarettes, probably since he also took up smoking since 14 years old, the stress of living in Yokeman can do that to you. At first he hung with out with us, and over time... he started keeping his distance. Then, half a year before graduation he just disappeared. I used to catch him trying to make eye contact with me, but would turn his head away the moment my eyes look back at him, or he notices the moment I turn my head around he faces the ground or elsewhere assuming I didn’t notice him checking me out. Perhaps…
