Preface

The objective of this report is presenting the works of Shikhar Yuva Manch in a brief but comprehensive manner. A total of three weeks of observation and active participation in the projects was spent during We Care - Civic Engagement Internship. The internship was scheduled for first year students of NMIMS from 4th February 2013 to 24th February 2013. The project was one of the first of its kind given to internee, as the current running projects are long and unable to cover within three weeks of time. The project was chosen by Mr. Bhupesh Vaishnav, President of the organization. The project was made keeping in mind the approach of organization in pursuing its operations. They were pointing towards a changing atmosphere in the world of social works with most of the projects of Shikhar Yuva Manch (From here on, referred to as SYM) running independently with different funding institutions and partner NGOs. The level of professionalism and standardization that has been achieved by SYM is remarkable, which makes its works impactful. The report presents a few of the projects and the relative methods used by SYM to reach its objectives and goals.
The report will be useful for any person needing information or interested in knowing about SYM. It is also helpful for people interested in knowing about the systematic way in which social works are pursued by NGOs nowadays. It can be also used by the organization for new trainees and interns as it presents its history as well as the contemporary projects pursued by the organization.
Because of lack of time in my internship, I was not able to visit to cover a few projects pursued by SYM, namely TDH and NEG Fire. The projects covered by me are OXFAM, PACS, SMILE Foundation Learning Centres and CHILDLINE.

The aim of the ‘Big Society’ project is to empower volunteers, charities and communities to provide services traditionally provided by the state (Sanghera 2011). The reason that the ‘Big Society’ is of academic interest is because this project could help to retain services which may otherwise be lost in this economic climate, also it is of interest because this project would change the public sector as the government are empowering local communities to gain more control over public services meaning control is given to these volunteers. The way this essay will be structured is firstly it will explain in a few sentences what the big society project is all about. It will then go on to explaining why the project has been a failure to date, then it will go on to some of the good things that have come out of the ‘Big Society’ project, then finally coming to a conclusion that the Big Society project has been a failure and the reasons for this which are lack of understanding by local communities, people not wanting to give up their free time, and the funding cuts made from other voluntary organisations.…
