Why I Want To Become A Social Worker Personal Statement
Since childhood I have been interested in helping people who have been less fortunate in life. A strong desire to help other people is one of the most compelling reasons for me to become a social worker. In fact I hold Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and Master’s Degree in Social Work from the Department of Sociology at Yerevan State University. Having wide experience in working with local and international governmental and non-governmental organizations, I organized and carried out focus group discussions with various target population groups in Yerevan and all the regions of the Republic of Armenia (RA). My educational background has also enabled me to organize and manage surveys, lectures, seminar-discussions on different topics, as well …show more content…
During my work I plan, structure, schedule and provide general management of the program under my supervision, carry out internal monitoring functions and coordination of the staff’s daily duties via conducting regular meetings and discussions with the project staff and representatives of partner organizations. I attach much importance to working with children and adolescents and teaching them the principles of teamwork, exploring various career development opportunities for them and enhancing the children’s ability to express their ideas clearly in order to succeed in all their initiatives. Moreover, my extensive work experience with local and international experts in different regions of RA during the last few years has provided me with a good understanding of the principles and specificities of what is prioritized for the existing Child Protection system in Armenia, what the current gaps are and what needs to be done to improve the …show more content…
That is why I am studying in the University of Lincoln. I am interested in the latest approaches and practices adopted worldwide and would like to learn new techniques and methods as well as learn to work with different target groups. As I mentioned above I have taken undergraduate and graduate programs in sociology and social work in Armenia and I have worked in this area for almost ten years. However, I feel this program will give me a much broader view of social work and its best international practice, it will allow me upgrading my knowledge and skills, will give me an opportunity to study in an academic system different from that of my country's, as well as I will have an opportunity to meet with different experts and practitioners from different countries. Most importantly, I hope to gain insights that will make my work in Armenia's rural areas more effective and useful to user groups, especially children and their families. In addition, as someone involved in social policy setting in Armenia, I hope to come out of this program with more ways of improving the social legislation and practice in my country. Overall, I believe this program will give me a great opportunity to become an international social worker, as well as to advance my theoretic knowledge and practical skills and to put it to better

My parents used to fight each other when I was young. My father has a common characteristic which shows on almost all traditional Asia men and that is male chauvinism. When the wife is a traditional Asia woman, it builds up a happy family in the world. However, my mother has her own opinion so sometimes fighting became a common thing in our family. Even though when I grew up and they stopped fighting and started arguing, I still can remember the feelings – helpless, scared and anxious. Therefore, when I meet a client who has involved in domestic violence, my experience may affect my view and consultation for my clients. To be a professional social worker, I need to have an objective view and not taking any bias on clients. For example, I may feel sorry for the victims which represent me and my mother in my mind, and pursue them to make a decision that I recognize is good for them.…

The opportunity I have had to pursue an Honors Specialization in Anthropology at Western has allowed me to have an expansive examination, through course work, of experiences of the philosophical and phenomenological. My knowledge level has naturally increased through my Western experience as, I believe, has my wisdom. I have enhanced both my rhetorical skills and my competence in critical analysis. The study of anthropology has given me a clearer sense of the intersection of issues, from structure to ideology and from cultures of interest to values which shapes my research interests. The addition of the Bachelor of Social Work program has allowed me to attain theoretical models of social work intervention to the 20 years of practical experience that I have had in the social service field. The blending of an anthropological and a social work perspective will allow me to have a more multidisciplinary approach to my future research in order to create a more holistic intervention…
