Shifting Schools In The United States
Imagine relocating to a neighborhood in order to live in an area next to a good school, only to have that school moved to a location that is forty or more minutes away; this also means waking up way earlier to make it to school on time. Almost all schools in the UAE are moving out of the city, and sooner or later, all schools will be released to rural areas. Shifting schools from the heart of the city to rural areas has negative impacts.

Change is necessary for anyone or anything to progress and survive. Sometimes change is seamless or unknown and other times it is met with protests, but nonetheless it still occurs. One of the most widespread of the reform movements was the temperance movement, which called for reducing the use of ,or abstaining from, any alcoholic beverages. This particular movement came about specifically because the Second Great Awakening religious reformers called for individuals to lead “clean” lives and the movement gained movement across the country. Unfortunately the movement was somewhat unsuccessful. American reformers also sought to implement school reform. Before the early 1800s, education for most Americans was very basic. For most, this meant a few months of schooling a year in a one-room rural schoolhouse. The wealthy engaged private tutors and academies. For the urban poor, a very few were able to attend private charitable…

To boost the academic averages, students must be more alert and well rested. In a study conducted in a Virginian middle school which started school 1 hour later at 8:15 instead of 7:15, the students had a 2.2 percentile increase in math, and a 1.5 percentile increase in reading on average (Resmovits). The results speak for itself, the extra sleeping time increased grades, productive in class, energy, ultimately resulted in better standardized test scores. Although changing the school start time has many benefits, school administrators have responded that if school started later, bus routes would have to be shifted and employee’s contracts and work hours would be significantly changed which the school districts have predicted to be a $220 million cost which board members are not eager to sign.(Brush). But don’t you think this cost is negligible? It’s a small fee to pay in order to insure the health and safety of the students.…

“America is right . . . If we are not educated together, we will live in fear of one another. If we are to stay together forever, why should we have separate schools?” said a spokesman in Kenya for the Luo tribe. This represents the fact that America is known to be a united country, although it had to suffer some tough times. For example, the 1950’s was a difficult era for African Americans.…

“42 states reported that most (75%-100%) public schools started before 8:30 a.m” (“Schools Start Too Early”). Most schools start before 8:30. A decent amount of schools start around 7:20. Schools start early in the day and release later in the afternoon. This has become routine, but studies show that students who start early in the day perform worse in school compared to those who start later in the day. Schools should implement a later start time for higher schoolers since high schoolers would get around the recommended amount of sleep, preventing sleeping in school and high schoolers academics and safety will increase, since they will get enough sleep to study before school and prevent drowsiness.…

All over the world there are horrible things happening to innocent people, and we trust in our government to protect us. That trust enables us to roam the streets with no immediate fear of our safety. Unfortunately, in many places people do not trust in their government to keep them safe because they know that their rulers are incapable; these people live in fear of sexual abuse, lack of educational rights, and poverty because there is a high possibility they could be caught among the midst of those threats at any given time. Fortunately there are many aid organizations to pick up the slack of the government and help fix these major issues with volunteers studying abroad, sponsorship,…

Many schools have good intentions of creating individuals, while others would argue that schools, their policies and structures are creating conformists. Personally, I do not think that schools are molding students into conformists. Schools’ expectations for high school students have given us the opportunity to be creative in the classroom while also teaching us to be responsible and mature when making choices.…

In recent years, municipal governments across America have found themselves searching for ways to trim costs by consolidating services with other municipal governments in the counties they’re in. They have consolidated law enforcement agencies, sanitation, health departments, municipal courts, etc. But in many of those counties, school systems have been left out of the discussion. In 2010, the Memphis City School (MSC) system made a failed attempt to merge with the Shelby County School (SCS) system through a referendum vote. Later that year, the MCS school board voted to surrender their charter thus legally forcing a merger of the two systems. This paper will attempt to weigh the pros and cons of operating a school system of more than 100,000 students from funding, quality of education, to the effects charter schools will have on the system and community. Good start, add you major arguments here in summary form.…

    Moving To High School

I’ve mostly gotten used to students stressing over “maxing out” because the school and classes I’m in are so competitive, it’s difficult to maintain the mindset that education isn’t just about grades, rather the learning, when I seem to be the only one with that perspective. As a student in the rigorous IB program, I often feel inferior academically to those around me because my grades haven’t always been consistently high like my classmates. Despite being a very social and vocal person, whenever the subject of careers, college, GPA, success/failure, etc. comes up, I tend to shy away from the discussion because I fear that I’ll come across as overconfident and as if I’m trying to distinguish myself as superior to others. To clarify, I firmly…
