Michelle Anderson is the Dean of CUNY School of Law, acting as a leading scholar in rape law. Her article entitled “Sex Education and Rape” explains the basis of consent pertaining to rape and teens’ sexual experience. It also examines messages about sex contained in popular culture and, most important for this presentation, describes the formal sex education given in school. At the end, it gives suggestions on how teens should be taught to negotiate sex. In section III, it goes over how abstinence based education is very limited in scope and advocates that, “You should wait until marriage before engaging in sex (heterosexual, vaginal penetration), and sexual abstinence is the only sure way to protect yourself from pregnancy and STDs.” Despite this, abstinence-based sex education does not do a good job conveying its main message since “40 percent of students report that they feel unprepared or only somewhat prepared to wait until they are older to have sex.” Sexual education in U.S. schools is therefore heavily based on a principle, abstinence, which it does not necessarily teach students to follow. The author uses data from the study “Sex Laws: Youth Opinion on Sexual Health Issues in the 2000 Election” to explore 18-24-year-olds’ opinions about different sexual issues. These include abortion laws, homosexual marriage laws, and what should be taught and funded in terms of sexual education in U.S. schools.     Doan and Williams examine abstinence only sex education in American public schools and how it contributes to the social constrains of women. This novel evaluates what the effects of abstinence only sex education, showing that this from of education doesn’t effectively prevent adolescence from having sex and can increase the risk of unwanted pregnancy. Primary sources are analyzed to show the results of abstinence only education compared to comprehensive sex education. This novel contains a lot of information about sex education in USA that is not entirely relevant to the topic of the social construct of virginity and how it affects women in Canada and USA from 2000- 2015; however, the information about gender politics ties in with the construct of virginity and how it generates the use of abstinence only education which can perpetuate sexual disempowerment, distorted power dynamics in relationships, and increased vulnerability to sexual assault is useful information.…

Teenagers who are exposed solely to abstinence-only sexual education programs are not experiencing this right to information.     There are two broad techniques used to provide sex education, comprehensive sex education and abstinence based sex education (Mezey, 2011). The abstinence-based avenue explains to children that it is morally wrong to have sex prior to a heterosexual marriage, which leads to many problems such as higher rates of unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and a lack of knowledge on all subjects related to sex and healthy relationships (2011). This is especially true amongst LGBTQIA+ and people with disabilities because they are left to find out sex and sexually related experiences through trial and error, and the Internet. Comprehensive sex education on the other hand, is when students are presented with every possible contraceptive option, their benefits and risks, statistical safety from preventing pregnancy and STDs/STIs (2011). Students also learn about what a healthy relationship is and how to effectively communicate their wants, needs, and limits in a sexual relationship. Comprehensive sex education is essential for students to grow into functioning adults, and thus participating members of a democracy (2011). Historically, sex education was not viewed as a necessary aspect for students until the 1960s and the demand for evidence-based education began in 1964. During this time period, Planned Parenthood established the Sexuality Information Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) to effectively education the younger population on sex and sexuality (2011).     We received a document prepared for the White House Task Force to Protect students from sexual assault, and in this report, there was evidence-based strategies for the primary prevention of sexual violence perpetration. These included policy suggestions and practices to improve safety, addressing social norms and behavior with messages from trusted and influential voices, as well as training student bystanders to intervene.     The United States has the highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancy of any developed country. Each year, unprotected sex results in almost four million teenagers contracting an STD. The HIV/AIDS epidemic is also a serious health concern for young people. Of the 40,000 new HIV infections in the US every year, about 20,000 occur in people under the age of 25, unprotected sex being to blame.
