Set Dollar Value Research Paper
Often times individuals have conversations trying to pin down the exact monetary value of each individual life. However, money is not the only way one can measure the worth of a life. Assigning dollar value is not an accurate way to value a person’s life, instead a life should be valued by the experiences lived in it. All lives are equally valuable and should be treated that way. Do to unfortunate circumstances, people sometimes lose limbs, when this occurs the government will often give them a certain amount of money depending on the limb that is lost. “Ebert spent more than half of a thirty- month stretch in hospitals. His breathing tube has been removed, but the hole in his throat remains open” (Roger Ebert). Ebert had his jaw removed yet got no sum of money. Doing this leads people to believe that a set dollar value can be put on any life. However, if someone were to lose their life there would be no real way to justify the amount of money they were worth. For instance, suffering and illness impact greatly how we value not only our lives but also our loved one’s lives. When we suffer if makes us appreciate the things we had once taken for granted that much more. Roger Ebert’s wife states,”..he had one or two weeks of hope and relief when he could eat a little and drink a little and talk a little. Once, the surgery looked nearly perfect.”(Roger Ebert) When we see our loved one’s suffering or ill it helps us value every chance we get to spend with them.
