Service Before Self
English Composition/ Illustration Final Draft
Service Before Self The day I finally signed up to join the military I knew I was taking a risk in my life. I believe it is important to take risks in life to move into bigger and better things. My first huge decision I made in my life was to join the United States Air Force. My uncle was the main person who put the idea in my head but my dad and my friends thought otherwise. My parents were divorced when I was young and I didn't have the privilege like my friends to sit down and talk their decisions through with their parents. My father was excluded from the draft after he got in a car accident and I didn't think he was very fond me joining the service. The main reason I chose to go into the military was make the decision to serve the country. The major decision in my opinion to join the military is to have the privilege to serve your own country. I think it is great for young men and woman to have ambition to serve and it can change a person into very motivated individual. My uncle and my mother were both very supportive and thought that it would be a great decision in my life. My mother knew it would be hard to see me go but was excited of the idea of coming to visit me in Texas. I knew it was taking a big risk being on my own but I was ready for a change in my life. With all the excitement of joining the military everything was moving very fast and it was already September 25 and it was time for me to get on the plane to basic training in San Antonio, Texas. During basic training I have never been linked to a more motivated group of people in life. Everyone had a fresh start in life and was very optimistic in where they were going in life. The six and half weeks of basic training went by very fast and I was sent to my tech school upstate in Texas. I was making great friends and had the best grades in my class. Everyone had a great attitude about what they were doing and couldn't wait to get

Three years in the Marine Corps JROTC program and I knew that I was going to be our next and first female cadet Commanding Officer. At the beginning of my junior year, my third year in the program, that was my goal to reach by the end of the year. I planned and worked hard for it; I took over staff meetings and took all of the responsibilities from my commanding officer at the time. One day, my senior Marine Instructor called me into his office after our drill practice and informed me of my new billet. He told me that I would, in fact, be our next cadet commanding officer due to my outstanding initiative and how well I have set myself apart from everyone else. I knew at that moment this would not be the most important accomplishment of my life,…

The Armed Forces is something my family is quite familiar with and has been an influential part of my life as a structure of leadership. My dad has told me a multitude of things he has experienced while in the Army and the opportunities given at hand when he was enlisted. I have also heard praises from many family members and family friends to the loved ones that have taken another step ahead by enrolling into college, and enhancing their leadership skills to become well renowned officers of the military. I will be taking this same road of success, but pushing it another level by applying for the NROTC, which will train my mind and body to guide others when I am commissioned into the Marine Corps.…

On May 7th 2006 I had just graduated Ranger school with my best friend in my platoon. We had both started the school as PFC’s and were immediately promoted to specialist after graduation. We also were moved into team leader positions as soon as we arrived back to our unit. At this point in time most of our platoon has been deployed at least once, either to Afghanistan in 2005 or the initial invasion of Iraq in 2003. Upon our arrival back to our unit we immediately went into training and preparation for our upcoming deployment to Iraq. The unit was set to deploy in November to replace our sister unit operating out of COB Speicher near Tikrit.…

During my junior year the biggest event I had to plan was the social event for the battalion: military ball. The event was one eagerly looked forward to, and rightfully so, as it was always a blast with the cadets and fostered many memories that will last a lifetime. I took planning this event very seriously and in the end many told me that it was the best military ball to date. Several cadets came to me after the formalities had concluded and thanked me for putting in the time and effort to make military ball happen. Seeing their gratitude and smiles on their faces made me feel appreciated and I knew that all the hours I had put in and almost wanting to tear my hair out in frustration had not gone in vain. During my senior year, another crucial event within the program changed. The criteria for our annual inspection had been altered drastically and we had to start from scratch will almost everything. This inspection is what JROTC works toward the entire school year, due to the fact that if a program receives a low score a certain amount of times, then the program can be disbanded. I, along with my staff, worked for months making sure that we had everything we needed and that our presentation was the best it could be. When the day of inspection finally came around, our hard work paid off. The battalion received a perfect score and was officially the best JROTC program in the county. This was the first time since my high school JROTC program’s conception in 2000 that we had received a perfect score on the…

The military has impacted my life in a weird way. I had a dream of becoming a Navy Seal for the longest, but my mother ironically told me “ you will not be in the military” and told me all of these reasons like you have asthma so you cant go. That never stopped me, I still wanted to be a seal. I studied everything about the Navy Seals to their habits all the way to their workouts. Studying the lifestyle of a Navy Seal has impacted me because it made me a better man during my time in high school. One of the most helpful things I got from a Navy Seal interview was wake up at 4AM. I can say waking up at 4 AM was hard but it made total sense. We only have 24 hours in a day and most the day is occupied by work or school and after that we have activities.…

About half the people I had started with were gone. But I, the weakest of all of them made it to the finish line. My wings were pinned on my uniform, and I was so happy I could have screamed. I knew then that there was truly nothing in the world I couldn't accomplish if I wanted it bad enough. For me, this experience really showed me who I was and what I was made of. Nobody thought I was going to complete basic training to begin with, much less go airborne. It was an experience I will never forget and I can proudly stand here today and say that I am an airborne…

My dream is to someday join the United States Air Force. Every day someone around the world risks their life just for us. They not only care about themselves but also about the country. To me, that takes a whole lot of courage to do. They fought for us with no hesitation as to the consequences that would occur. Could you imagine how they feel knowing that they can’t just go to the mall on a Saturday afternoon? They can’t enjoy the ability of being able to take a nap after a hard day’s work. They have a duty and they are 110% committed to it and I’m willing to commit as…

A year after arriving at Fort Polk I had made a name for myself as one of the fastest runners in the company, I was still nowhere near Olympic level but fast for the Army standards. I was a young Private First Class hoping to get promoted early to specialist but I had little to show for almost a year in service. My sergeant came to me close to the end of the duty day one evening and asked if I would like to go to airborne school, he thought I would do well and it would help me get promoted. I didn’t even think and said yes,…

There are multiple reasons in which I enlisted myself into the United States Army. Over the course of training, things settled down and it was pretty much a routine now. I got to really know by roommates and cadets in my division. We all helped each other out every time we had assigned tasks which I thought it was a really neat and satisfying experience as we did not know each other just few days before. Each day went by slower and slower as it reaches the end. I almost had a feeling not wanting to head back home. The sense of camaraderie had overcome me. I had that feeling I would miss the people around me and the staff cadets even though they were really harsh on us, but they help give us an experience in which I could never forget.…

It was a cold November night my mother dropped me off at the hotel all the recruits were required to stay at prior to the flight. We hugged and I told her I’d see her soon if she squeezed any tighter I thought a rib would snap. The next day I arrived in San Antonio Texas to my first military experience. My nerves had my legs shaking getting off the bus that’s where I met my first supervisor MSgt Hudson. Although I was a stoutly built guy 5’7 190lbs this man was about 6’2 180lbs but his energy and voice was enough to destroy any of our strategy to get through the next 8 weeks. Once I got the hang of how to not get yelled at basic training was pretty easy and time started to fly by. Then came one of the more memorable moments of my life I received my airman’s coin that’s when I knew I finally was on track to achieving my…

First, I would like to express what service and leadership means to me. Service is work done for somebody else as a favor or a duty, often with regard to whether it pleases them or not. It goes beyond tutoring ADHD children in these less fortunate neighborhoods; it goes on for a lifetime. Service is something everyone should experience once in a lifetime. It’s a blessing to be able to help someone at a vulnerable time in their life or because they aren’t able to make it happen for themselves, it’s priceless.…

So at the first chance I got to leave I took it. I signed up for the Army, and left for a whole new worlds to explore. Because of the military, I have lived in 3 different homes in the United States and traveled to Ireland, Germany, Spain, Kuwait, and Iraq. Without it I probably never would have had the chance to leave Indiana. To me it was perfect way to wonder the world. The military paid for my travels, food, and housing. Granted this didn’t come without sacrifice. But I gained so much knowledge and so many skills from it that I would have never been allowed to think of trying in the civilian life. I also found a…
