Personal Narrative-Haunted Ranger School
On May 7th 2006 I had just graduated Ranger school with my best friend in my platoon. We had both started the school as PFC’s and were immediately promoted to specialist after graduation. We also were moved into team leader positions as soon as we arrived back to our unit. At this point in time most of our platoon has been deployed at least once, either to Afghanistan in 2005 or the initial invasion of Iraq in 2003. Upon our arrival back to our unit we immediately went into training and preparation for our upcoming deployment to Iraq. The unit was set to deploy in November to replace our sister unit operating out of COB Speicher near Tikrit. The type of missions we were conducting were new to all of us. Our normal means of transportation …show more content…
I could see the focus in the eyes of my men and I could see that they were well prepared and ready to execute this mission. We knew that we had about an hour and a half flight and normally most would take advantage of this time and get what sleep they could before clearing houses for the rest of the night. Something about this mission wouldn’t allow anyone to get any sleep. I kept going over the steps that I had to take to lead my platoon into the village. I wanted to get to the target house as quickly as possible and get security established to allow 1st squad to flow right in and clear the …show more content…
As I moved down the street to the next house, I noticed that the gate to the courtyard was open and again this just didn’t feel right. I relayed the info back and was told to proceed anyway. As I stepped inside the front gate I located the front door of the house and began moving towards it to get into position. As soon as I went through the gate an IED went off out in the street. I immediately turned and ran back out in the street to get accountability of my men. I was relieved to see that none of them had been harmed and even more relieved to hear that the other squads were all reporting the same. Until someone noticed a body in the middle of the street approximately 50 meters

Kelman and Hamilton claim written orders were never issued (par 6). All orders were passed by word of mouth; by the time they had traveled through Barker, Medina, Calley and finally to the soldiers, the only message that was conveyed was this: the Son My area must be destroyed (Kelman and Hamilton, par 7).Soldiers were under the impression that only VC would be in that village. The Peers Report, mentioned in Kelman and Hamilton’s composition “The My Lai Massacre: A Military Crime of Obedience,” said that it is “reasonable to conclude that LTC Barker’s minimal or nonexistent instructions concerning the handlings of noncombatants created the potential for grave misunderstandings” (par 7). These vague directions were destined to bring about poor results. Because of the ambiguity of the orders, our soldiers cannot be held responsible for the outcome of My…

Jim Frederick’s book “Black Hearts” explores the harrowing account of soldiers from 1st Platoon, Bravo Company, 502nd Infantry Regiment during their deployment in 2005-2006 through Iraq’s “Triangle of Death”. The story is one of failed leadership at all levels, resulting in broken bonds between brothers, drug abuse, and ultimately the rape and murder of an Iraqi family. The soldiers’ descent into complete isolation was brought on by not only dire combat situations, but also a complete disregard for their mental health by higher. This essay will compare and contrast the roles of SSG Eric Lauzier and SFC Jeff Fenlason, and how their leadership had a positive or negative effect on their subordinates.…

The intelligence reports of the Shah-i-Khot Valley were faulty not due lack of effort. Several assets were used in trying to gather intelligence: human reconnaissance, aerial reconnaissance, and communication intercepts were all widely used. Several SOF ground reconnaissance teams were also getting as close to the valley’s floor as possible without being detected. Initial estimates of the enemy ranged from 100-1000 enemy fighters, but after arduous discussions and reports filed in, it was determined that a better estimate was 200-300 fighters with a larger civilian population numbering somewhere around 1000. This large civilian population complicated things by nullifying most attempts of heavy air strikes and support. The portrait for the upcoming battle portrayed that of a weak,…

It was almost halloween, Just a few days away back in 2015, when we decided to go to the haunted railroad. Like any other person would do around halloween to pay a ridiculous amount for people to scare you when you can do it for free, buts that’s not the point. It was my mom, dad, two family friends; Ben, Joe, and of course I was there too. Well, my aunt Lucy and her partner Laura were supposed to go but they were too scared to go, so they just stood in the car and waited for us to come out.…

I am a “boot” adjusting to my new life in kilo company, and corporal has recently returned from a nasty deployment in iraq. He says that he is my father and that he knows what’s best. he kicks sand at me while i am timed to see how fast i can pick up all the yellow cigarette butts he dumped on the floor to “fix” my attention to detail and remind me of my ignorance, as he yells, “you are going to war soon, and I won’t be there to babysit you!” During the deployment workups in the states, we spent weeks patrolling, looking for something that we knew wasn’t real. Digging into defensive positions and waiting the night out for an enemy we knew would never come. Spending rainy nights in muddy holes, fearing what our leaders might do to us if we fell asleep. Firing machine guns, shooting rifles and launching grenades at little green targets…. All of it was just training ops.…

Throughout PFC I have learned and gained many new important factors in life whether they are new skills to lifelong friends. Being in PFC has exposed me to new ways of learning and becoming a better leader in the future. From the beginning, I have inherited new skills through the trainings conducted and last minute conflicts on the freshman days of service I have been a part of. The trainings were not just a way of torture, waking up on Saturday mornings dragging myself to work so I can sit there for four hours just to listen to someone talk and instruct us on what to do. Those trainings were another way for us all to get together, learn about each other’s qualities, and being able to deliver to the program to creating a better community for…

The next day woke me by the sound of gun fires and our men yelling waking us up. We grabbed our gear and hid behind the rough hills as a shield. It started, as frightened as I already was my friend had just got killed by the blazing bomb. I didn’t know how to feel about it in this rush of survival, so I ran as the next bomb was coming my way. But what could I do about it? I have to protect myself as well. I didn’t put my life at stake I was forced like all the other soldiers. My life is at risk and if I survive I will go home with proud survival guilt. As I had just lost focus of what was happening because I was so shocked thinking this is what war really is; a gun manages to pass through my arm as if I’m not weak already. I fall down to the ground with the scent of dirt southing (soft rustling) through my nose. A blurred vision of my troops fighting was the only other sense apart from the sound of air raid sirens and drones. I can’t believe no one has noticed me, they probably have but don’t…
