Age Group | Physical Development | Communication Development | Intellectual & learning Development | Social Development | Emotional and Behavioural Development | Birth to 2 mths | * Usually born around 40 weeks gestation * Has swallowing and sucking reflex * Has rooting reflex * Has grasp reflex * Walking or standing reflex * Gaining about 5-7 ounces per week * Growth about 5cms by age 2 months | * Will move their arms and clench their fists if a sudden noise or bright light * Will cry when hungry or distressed * Will stop crying when they hear a familiar voice * Will develop different types of cry | * Will recognise the smell and sound of their mother’s voice * Can see things very close up * Can focus on objects around 25cms away | * Will coo when settled at about 5-6 weeks * | * Settled when in close contact with mother or primary carer * Needs around 16 hours of sleep per day, 8-15 feeds per day reducing to about 6 * Fleeting smiles when asleep | 3mths | * Grown in height and weight * Limbs are straightened out * Can focus * Can support their head for several seconds * Can hold a rattle but can’t look at it at the same time * Can rest their weight on their hands when on their tummy * Muscle tone improves * Starts drooling | * Hearing is improving and will move their head towards sounds * Sight follows adults and moves their heads in correct direction * Watches faces intently * Begins to babble * | * Clasps hands together Showing eagerness when they see a bottle, breast * Start to notice things like mobiles * Will use their hands more to grasp toys etc within reach * Will suck their fingers | * Makes noises when happy * Smile back when they see a smiling face * Enjoys play with adults * Enjoys hearing singing | * Has developed a feeding/sleeping pattern *
