Senior Paper
I am a second level student in Early Childhood Education. Our second level project is the implementation of a grant, Awareness: The Key to Friendships. We will present centers to 3rd grade students at Delmae Elementary School. I have chosen to create my center on Pick & Clip. I have chosen to research Spina Bifida also known as Myelomeningocele as a cause of physical impairments in children. Spina Bifida is a congenital defect of the spine in which part of the spinal cord and its meninges are exposed through a gap in the backbone. This syndrome was discovered over four hundred years ago. The most common type of Spina Bifida is Myelomeningocele. The neural tube defect which the spine not forming completely, results in a spinal canal that is incomplete. Myelomeningocele is a birth defect in which the backbone and spinal canal doesn’t close before birth. I will create my center based on this disability. I will make my center appropriate for the 3rd grade students at Delmae Elementary school, so that every individual child may participate in the activity at hand. I will gather the appropriate materials, prepare the correct handout for the children based on my center, compile teacher packets, and memorize instructions for my center’s activity. The materials used in my activity were socks, beans, bolts, paper clips, and medicine bottles. I will then answer any unanswered questions and take comments. The activity Pick and Clip shows how it will feel for anyone who has a physical disability with the hands and how difficult things may be. On November 20, 2012, our Early Childhood Education level 2 class, attended Delmae Elementary school to present our senior projects to the 3rd grade class.
