Self Reliance In To Kill A Mockingbird
Through behaviors towards one's beliefs become the outcome of who they really are in a stance of self reliance. Morals are something that everyone possesses, and only those who follow them have a true sense of dignity and self truth of who they really are. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee demonstrates how the decisions that characters make significantly prove their morals.
Atticus is a self upright man who defends his beliefs for his family and society. When he is appointed Tom Robinson's case, who is accused of raping Bob Ewell's daughter, Atticus takes the case without a second thought. They at one point knocked on his door and ran back home. While this happened Atticus came out and talked to Scout on the porch. She continued to tell him what bad things he had done and they just wanted to see him. Atticus tell Scout, “You’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider from his point of view” (Lee 39). Towards the end of the book when Mr. Ewell follows Jem and Scout in the woods with intentions to hurt them, Boo Radley came to save them. After Bob fractured Jem's arm Bob stuck a butter knife under Bob’s ribs then carried Jem bag to safety. Boo did this after the kids and everybody in the town thought of him as a murder, good for nothing killer. Although, Atticus, Mr. Tate, and Scout all knew what really happened. They wanted to keep Boo Radley safe because it would be like killing a Mockingbird.Mr. Tate claimed, “He’d flung flung Jem down, he stumbled over a root under that tree…and Bob Ewell stabbed himself with that knife” (Lee 367-3680 Though he went through these false accusations because it was the right thing to do. He didn’t want anything bad to happen to anyone of innocence. Scout see’s him as a true man as she sees what shoes he has to fill.
