In Joseph M. Williams and Lawrence McEnerney’s Writing in College, Williams and McEnerney discuss the shift from high school writing to college writing where argument, interpretation of expectations, and learning how to make a “good” point in a paper are key to successfully satisfying the instructor’s assignment. Arguments should be convincing, with evidence to support their reasons, and to have counters answering objections and other questions that may go against its favor. Williams and McEnerney write, “-universities hold as their highest value not just the pursuit of new knowledge and better understanding, but the sharing of that knowledge…whatever it is we think, it is never the entire truth. Our conclusions are partial, incomplete, and…
This semester’s CC112 course was quite interesting for me. I thought I wouldn’t do well because of the topic, controversial issues, but it actually tuned out I was wrong. I enjoyed learning and writing about the never ending controversial issues around the world. I’ve witnessed a great amount of improvement in my work since coming into this course. Taking CC112 has helped me better my organization and writing skills by practicing the writing process with each essay, being able to incorporate outside sources into my work using MLA standards of quotation and reference, and being able to write a correct works cited page according to MLA standards. Based on the comments I received from my professor at the beginning of the semester, I needed to work on these very things.…
The amount I have changed as a writer is unbelievable. The biggest change is that I no longer loathe writing a paper. I feel as though it comes more naturally than before, and I can now make complete sentences easier than ever before. Another thing that has changed is how quickly I can write a paragraph before I would struggle getting a cohesive thought on a page, but now writing a paragraph that relates all together in some way is easier. All of this brings me onto my next point.…
During my first semester as a college freshman I have grown a lot not only as a student, but also as a person. At first I thought of myself as a good writer, but throughout the semester I learned that I had a lot of improvements to make in my writing. Already I have made a lot of progress and will continue to improve throughout the rest of the year in core.…
Andreea Robison Final Reflection When starting this class I was very much motivated to getting in school, getting my work done and learning; being that better me. In many ways to make a better life for my Husband and I. We promise each we were going to do better in our relationship with building each other up. That means attitudes, better jobs etc. I can say staying in that mindset was bit challenging in learning that soon there would be a new edition to the family.…
On the self-assessment inventory, I scored between 76 and 88 out of 100 on each key competency except for the Change and Across Cultures competencies. My scores were within the numerical range for 68% of managerial professionals that completed this self-evaluation. For the most part, I see myself as very good on a number of the skills such as balancing my personal and work life, embracing uniqueness, supporting the goals of a team, and making ethical business decisions. For the Across Cultures competency, I am lacking in global experience and the skills to recognize the differences of various cultures and customs. In addition, I need to improve on recognizing, leading, and implementing adaptations when needed by teams and organizations.…
We had to write from narrative essays, to persuasive essays, to argumentative to reflective essays. This course expanded my knowledge of how to write different kinds of essays because each type of essay has to be written in a certain way with a certain tone. For instance, in my persuasive in class essay Without a Saddle, I had to persuade the audience that youth learn either through experience or promoting cautiousness through restrictions. I thought I was good at writing persuasive essays before but now I learned how to persuade so that the audience can understand my point of view. And after understanding what Professor Anderson is trying to tell me, I revised my paper into a well developed essay. I have noticed that I developed a better and a not so broad thesis, and I have clear transition sentences. That makes the reader understand what is going on and to keep the reader…
My writing process has evolved since the beginning of the year. Looking back at my previous essays and writing assignments over the course of the semester, I can distinctively see a gradual improvement through the different pieces of writing. Even though the differences from my early works at the beginning of the semester might not be drastic, the small improvements are what positively impacted my writing style. From the beginning of class until now, I have discovered new strengths and weaknesses, redefined my writing process, and corrected mistakes from the essays along the way.…
I have learned about the different types of essays, such as: the remembering essay, the compare and contrast essay, the cause and effect essay, and the reflective essay. I have also learned different techniques to set up an essay. An outline is one of the most important and useful things I have learned this semester. It helps me organize my essays and it also makes it ten times easier to write the essays. Another important thing I have learned from this class is how to use MLA format. These notes are the things that have helped enhance my knowledge about…
The first part of self assessing me was pretty important because it was a sum of my whole lifestyle in one. Giving me an overall look on what I should change or if I should even change any of my habits. My smoking score was a perfect 10, which was not surprising at all to me. My alcohol/drug score for this was seven points because I do drink. The score for my eating and exercising habits were perfect because I do a good job when it comes to eating right and working out on a daily. My stress control score was an eight, but I do understand why. I do know that I stress to some extent. My last score was safety and the score for that was a nine. I think my life is pretty amazing if you ask me.…
Overall, I feel that I have not done up to my expectations over the course of the two presentations. Comparatively, these are the areas that have improved/worsened:…
"If writing seems hard, it's because it is hard, it's one of the hardest things people do."…
Writing is definitely a process. How I wrote when I was a child and how I write today is extremely different. My relationship with reading has also changed as I grow older.…
Each of the self-assessments were an eye opener to me and to what my life has been like since the first-time primary socialization has taken place. The results for my analysis were more focused on groups. Most of the words that I wrote down put me into groups with other people, such as, nursing student or bibliophile. The results for the second analysis were that I am in the normal range for self-esteem. The next analysis that I did told me that I believe we are all in control of our own fate. To me, this means that the actions I take determine how my life will play out and that the term luck is used by people who are too afraid to take control or do anything with their life. The fourth analysis showed me that in some situations my behavior…
So everything—my reading, writing, and other experiences— started with my birth on October 6, 1996; well okay, not really—it didn’t start with my birth. They, my reading and writing experiences, started with preschool, which is the same for most people. These two skills are an integral part of my life; I use them almost every day. However, that doesn’t mean I have to like both of them. I did not like reading very much then, writing even more so; essays and paragraphs and essays and some more essays were painful. My writing skills, to say the very least, were not very developed. As time passed, however, my views toward writing and reading began to change and my ability to write evolved. My reminiscing begins with preschool and there, my first encounter with writing.…
