Sea World-Personal Narrative
People who are really good friends of mine or good observers have noticed that I wear a dolphin ring on my left ring finger. I have had this ring since the summer of 2007. This ring is a souvenir from my favorite family vacation. Nine years ago, my family and I traveled to San Antonio, Texas. While we were there, we visited the river walk, the mall, the Alamo, Sea World, Six Flags, and the zoo. All of those destinations were fun and each has a story to tell, but my favorite one was our day at Sea World.
While we were at Sea World, we visited with dolphins, whales, sharks and even non-aquatic animals such as flamingos. At dolphin cove, we bought some sardines to feed the dolphins. Basically, we dangled the food over the pool and the dolphins would rise to the surface with their mouths open. We pet the dolphin, then fed it the fish. I was a little scared at first due to the fact that the only live animals I had touched were not aquatic, but I warmed up quickly. The dolphins were very smooth and friendly as long as one did not put their

I made sure to have anything and everything that had a dolphin on it. Whether it was a shirt, necklace, or ring, I begged my mother, father, or grandparent for it. I do not have much of the merchandise now because I grew out of the shirts and my interests had changed once I entered junior high, but I still keep a pair of earrings, a necklace and my ring as reminders of my love for marine life and my childhood. The dolphin continues to be my spirit animal as time passes. It is a symbol that represents intelligence, playfulness, protection, resurrection, strength, and cooperation. A dolphin’s playfulness reminds me that life is not supposed to be perfect, it is full of twists and turns, and that I should learn to have fun even in my worst times, which also demonstrates strength in difficulty. Like a dolphin, I am also very intelligent, cooperative, and protective of the people I

    Sand Shark Research Paper

The sand shark is very important to my tribe, and I shall tell you why. Once, a very long time ago, a group of hunters were looking for animals for food and supplies. The eldest, and wisest, said “We must continue hunting! Do not lose hope!” Suddenly a squirrel scampered across a cedar branch. The youngest was quick, he raised his bow, arrow drawn, and shot. The squirrel was too quick, the arrow missed. Several days later, hunger spread throughout the village. The three hunters had failed to collect enough food for the winter. Many died, some went mad with starvation. One day in winter, the hunters had no choice but to hunt. After several hours, they noticed that one spot of water had not frozen. The hunters made the decision to go fishing.…

I went to the Art Museum of South Texas to take a look at the artwork they had on display there. I found that they had an exhibit called Liquid Light and it included black and white photographs of the sea and its inhabitants. In this exhibit there were works from 10 different photographers and while I loved and developed an appreciation for many of the photographs on display the one that caught my eye was the “Diving Humpback whale” by Wayne Levin (born 1945). This paper will focus on why Wayne Levin takes photographs of the underwater world and why the “Diving Humpback Whale” photograph was my favorite.…

    Killer Whales Research

This Killer Whale, Keiko, was born in the wild and captured around the age of two. He was then sold and transferred from Iceland to an amusement park in Mexico, where he lived in a single pool without contact with any other Orcas from 1985 to 1996. The amusement park had a few bottle nosed dolphins in the same program, but for the most part Keiko was alone. Later, Keiko was conditioned to follow a boat and was taken out regularly to do open ocean swims as a part of a research study. During these swims, Keiko was in proximity of other local Killer Whales and eventually his human interaction was limited over the course of a few months. Initially, Keiko’s interaction with the wild Orcas was partial. He and the pod generally moved away from one another. After a few open ocean swims and being taken directly toward the pod, Keiko began to follow the pod within a local vicinity. The pod seemed to tolerate his presence and thus Keiko began to travel with the group. However, after Keiko’s release back into the wild, researchers studied how often Keiko approached the boat. The group reported that he approached the boat roughly sixteen times, this was with minimal interaction on the researchers’ part. (Simon) Moreover, after captivity and immense amounts of human captivity and no social interaction with other Killer Whales for a period of eleven years, releasing Keiko into the wild showed extreme behavioral differences from other wild Orcas in the area. Since the social construct of a pod of Kill Whales is extremely strong, often times outsider whales are left to swim at a certain distance from the pod. Observations were made of Keiko swimming in the vicinity of the group, but there were no observations or research made that showed Keiko apart of the social…

Who does not love to see dolphins and whales flipping and doing tricks? Although the animals look happy and unharmed, there is a dark truth behind the captive marine life in amusement parks and zoos. Yes, attending zoos and marine life amusement parks are a part of childhood; but recently researchers have discovered just how cruel the environment is for the marine life in captivity. After studies of comparing the quality of life of marine animals in the wild and in captivity, there are multiple examples shown in Blackfish, PETA, and the Animal Welfare Institute that show that animals prosper and live longer in their natural habitats. Due to the cruelty endured by the captivated Orcas, all the SeaWorld parks should be shut down and the Orca whales should be set free to prevent further demise to their species.…

Quoted from Peta.org “Dolphins from Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida were unable to open their eyes and their skin started peeling off as the chemicals in the water had unknown side effects.” The tanks are so limited that they spend more than half of their times above water, causing them to obtain sunburns, which the performers cover with black zinc so the viewers can not see the sun burn on the orcas backs. Marine parks put on shows showing people dolphins who can hug their trainers and whales who can be trained to kiss a trainer. This is teaching people unrealistic expectations about the animals and humans relationships. This leads to incidents like the selfie taking tourists that passed around a baby dolphin like a toy for photos, and ended up killing the helpless creature in the progress.…

Saving Tuxedos Killer whales do not belong in captivity because they are intelligent mammals created to live a free life unchallenged in the sea. A killer whales gift in this world is not to entertain crowds from the confines of a pool, but rather to help sustain and control the flourishing life across vast oceans, and the land. They are found in all the world’s oceans, before captivity, they were described as “blood-thirsty killing machines” (Kirby, 2012, p. 3). The killer whale plays a major role in the bigger picture we call life. “Homebodies and roamers, herders and hunters--killer whales divide up into distinct societies, each with customs and a history of its own” (Martin, 1993).…

As a kindergartener, when I grew up I wanted to be a princess, or own a hamster farm, or never really grow up at all. In second grade I developed an obsession with the ocean and what lives in it, specifically sharks. Because of my love of sharks I decided that when I grew up I wanted to be a marine biologist. When I made this decision I never knew what a big part math played in this profession. Math has always been my biggest weakness when it came to my education. I would spend hours trying to understand all the numbers and what to do with them. I know now regardless of my love of the ocean, I would have ended up being miserable having to spend the rest of my life constantly feeling confused and idiotic.…

As was previously mentioned, the word ‘dolphin’ is related to the ancient Greek word ‘womb’ and has been used to describe fraternal associations regarding human relationships. The word Adelphi literally means ‘of the same womb’. It is a reference to the notion that two brothers once shared their mother’s womb and therefore have a strong bond a fraternal bond - twin. It is the same root word for the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia (Philadelphia Freedom -Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy- recorded at The Caribou Ranch, CO ).…
