School Counselor Interview Paper
I conducted an interview with my friend, Jeff Reme. He’s a first year school counselor in a middle school in Queen, NY. I asked him 10 questions and this is how the interview went: Trish: What do you see as the main role of a counselor? Jeff: To provide a positive outlet to students while addressing their social and emotional needs to achieve academic success. Trish: What influenced you to be a school counselor? Jeff: Because of the lack of counseling that was given to me when I was growing up. I had a school counselor in High School that spent time on the computer shopping for personal items. I just wanted to do a better job than she did. I always wanted to work with kids and counseling the youth. I feel the need of counseling is a preventative measure for the kids. Trish: How do you handle stress? Jeff: By engaging in self –care. I play basketball. I leave the stress at work. I approach each work day as every day is a new day and I do what I need to do to support the child. Trish: How does a comprehensive school counseling program support the school’s academic mission? Jeff: I would come up with a prevention plan that will be effective in every grade. I definitely assess the school’s climate and how it’s affecting the kids. I would create an incentive to get the children interested in coming to school. I would do a weekly raffle. Each day the student attends school; their name would be entered into a raffle. So if they attend all week, it definitely increases the chances in winning the weekly raffle. I can also communicate with the child’s parents to find out what’s going on at home to see what may be contributing to the lateness. Then I would offer help with the problem.
