How Publication Enhanced An Understanding of the School Counselor’s Role in Test/Assessment
Being a School Counselor is a very rewarding profession. “School counselors reject the use of high-stakes test or the use of any other single measurement instruments the only indicator of student success”(ASCA, 2014). The school counselor encourages multiple measures when life-influencing decisions are being made. It permits the probability of imprinting positive impacts on the lives of so countless students. The research conducted in this article was done so to ascertain, “…how school counselors perform various assessment and evaluation activities seen as a first important step in providing a description of the knowledge and skills that school counselors need in these areas”, Ekstrom, Elmore, Schafer,Trotter, & Webster (2004). According to Elmore, Ekstrom, Diamond, and Whittaker (1993), 67% of a group consisting of 423 American School Counselor Association (ASCA) members thought that partaking in testing and assessment was an significant part of their occupation. Ekstrom, Elmore, Schafer,Trotter, & Webster (2004). Samp, Vaccc, and Loesch (1998), conducted a survey of 390 proficient school counselors revealed the importance utilizing counselors at both individual and professional …show more content…
It was used in order to recognize which particular set of skills and training thought to be required by counselors when developing assessment and or evaluation actions. It was composed of 39 questionnaires as a caution, it should be noted that this survey may not yield the representative probability of school counselors entirety. The participants consisted of responses from 72 elementary school counselors, 32 middle school counselors and 50 high school counselors, Ekstrom, Elmore, Schafer,Trotter, & Webster (2004). The results revealed that the high school counselors were more proactively involved with testing/assessment than those who worked in elementary and middle schools. This studied also divulged the fact that school counselors are typically used to handle clerical work such as handling behavioral referrals and/or working in the school

    After I read the ASCA Model on page 9 of textbook, I knew the leadership, advocacy, teaming and collaboration and systemic change are all what school counselors should focus on. I also learned that school counseling is a profession that focuses on the relations and interactions between students and their school environment with the purpose of reducing the barriers in order to help students to success. In my opinion, the team-member and collaborator is the most challenging for a school counselor in an urban school setting. Because as an effective team-member and collaborator, school counselor work with teachers, administrators and other school personnel to make sure that each student succeeds. However, sometimes working with other school setting educators is not very easy. For example, some teachers do not like to follow the advices from counselors, they believe that their ways are perfect. Hence, they do not want to hear the voice from counselors. I understand everybody has different ideas, but I also believe that our students will get benefits if we can work together as a team. We share our opinions and hear everyone’s advice.
