Sarung Banggi Indie Film
Sarong Banggi
Film Critique by:
PAULO KEVIN DELA CRUZ

Sarong Banggi as the title of the movie is derived from the Bicolano folk song and it was also used as one of the soundtrack of the film. Sarong Banggi or “Isang Gabi” or “One Night”

SYMBOLISM
The entire story took place in one night so Lights are mostly emphasized in the story and obviously those are utilized to keep up the atmosphere but I think the lights have meaning in congruent with the night life and the things that always happen every night. Light is a symbolism that reveals the transactions happen in the dark such as prostitutions and night hang-outs (bars and disco places). It is said that light keeps the momentum and the atmosphere of the scene and in this film, it is utilized artistically.
Another symbolism is the white rose. It symbolizes purity. In this film, Melda played by Jacklyn Jose brought a white rose while waiting for some customer. Later on, Nyoy kept one of the petals of the rose. Perhaps, it would mean that unintentionally Nyoy took some part of the purity of her own mother which is Melda and kept it inside his pocket which only he knew.
The pocket may also be a symbolism for it is an instrument to be used as keeper of money and even confidential things. In this film, it was shown that Nyoy has money and he picks it from his pocket in order to pay for the night. The very intriguing twist, Melba found out that Nyoy is her own son through the pocket of Nyoy and the photo that is kept inside. So as Melba had the missing part of the photo in her own pocket and this was shown in the latter part. Thus, pocket would symbolizes a revelation.

CHARACTERS
The film can be perceived as good in terms of talents scouting because the actors and actresses are just as good and not bad in terms of delivery. Jacklyn Jose plays the role of Melba as an aging prosti who later experienced the twist in her life. The portrayal by Jacklyn Jose was effortlessly and naturally delivered which can be doubt if she really acts.
Angelo Ilagan as Nyoy was just good and effective. There was no special in his portrayal except that he was young and innocent looking.
Some of the characters are:
Mark (Pierro Rodriguez)
Jade (Alchris Galura)
Ely (Miguel Iñigo Guño)

PHILIPPINE CONTEMPORARY ISSUES
Basically, the film shows about prostitution that dominantly exists in Manila. From the story, it enacts about an aging prosti waiting for some of his customer.
However, as the movie developed can be realized that there are also issues being tackled in the film like Peer Pressure that had happened between Nyoy and his friends. Another is abandonment which can be latter realize when Melda found out that Nyoy is her own son, the baby she has given to somebody else before.
Also, the setting in the baywalk is another issue because the film shows it is mostly where prostituted women come to meet with the customer.
And, the Malate and the disco places where minor people can enter and cannot be detected can be also included.
CONCEPT
The idea of the film is basically about prostitution.
The concept is new because the story is not static and has unexpected twist. It goes like this:
The teenage boy goes to a celebration of his birthday and wanted by his friend to develop his manhood so they called a prosti to satisfy him but only they find out that the woman is old so they decided to look for another. But twist by fate, the teenage boy goes back to the old woman and have developed some comfort into friendship and later he had gotten her and lost his virginity. However, the old woman later found out that the teenage boy is her own son who she had abandoned before, but the old woman keeps the truth in herself.

The plot is somewhat similar to Oedipus tragedy.

OBSCENITY
The film and the story is meant for mature people and not intended for young people. Perhaps, it is obscene. It has a theme of prostitution so expected that the story concept and plot intended for adult people.
Although there really no penetration that happened in the movie but I think the story and the concept is worthy enough to tag it as obscene.

MOVIE RATE
It is rated R-13 that is restricted only for 13 years old and above. The concept and the plot are not suited for very young audiences.
Although there is no full nudity happened but it has mature theme, mature dialogue and obvious sexual act, so, worthy to be restricted for the 13 years old and above only to watch. These ages can already comprehend of what the story about and the mature thinking is already present.

For most of the movie natural lighting is used considering over half of the movie is shot outside. While the sun may cause there to be glares when shots are taken, they normally use special lenses to help with adjusting to the light allowing for a clearer picture. The natural lighting suggests that the movie is more realistic in most aspects. However, there are few scenes that were shot at night to where there were not any available natural lighting so other techniques were used. Lighting such as flares, fires, car lights and flashlights functioned as lighting during the night. While these lights did not offer as clear of a picture as the natural lighting it helped set the mood for their atmosphere, in which this case was war. The types of lighting used in this movie helped establish the realistic…

The lighting was also used to accentuate depressing or joyful moments, making it dimmer when it was a dark moment and making it bright when they were sitting outside to show a sunny day. An example of excellent lighting was when Bill was in the club and how the back was like a dance floor and he was at the bar where it was brighter and when they used two different types of lighting on the same stage which made it look realistic. The lighting overall made my experience multiple times better than it already was because I was in…

Guo-Qiang created this to show the process behind a horrific event such as this. He uses the lights to symbolize flame and explosion which brings out the power behind the piece. While he doesn’t condone these bombings he wants the world to see what they are like and in turn bring attention to these problems occurring in our world today. This artwork makes people question things occurring such as this and can give people a better insight on what is happening and what can be done to help put an end to these problems, as Guo-Qiang does with many of his other works of art.…

The use of lighting in the play and the poem help give the audience an idea of the mood that the protagonists are in, for example in the play The Shoe-Horn Sonata the use of dim light whilst on stage is used to great effect whenever Sheila or Bridie are saying something that is meaningful the light is dimmed to create or set the mood. For example when Sheila is confessing about sleeping with a Japanese solider the light is dimmed to create a “sombre” mood. In “Vergissmeinicht” Douglas uses motif of darkness in the second stanza to paint a clear picture for the reader, Douglas uses the phrase “like an entry of a demon” which suggests darkness and grim times or a near death situation.…

    Symbolism In The Bell Jar

    • 713 Words
    • 3 Pages

Towards the beginning, there is not much symbolism, but one starts to see small symbols placed in chapters as Esther leaves New York; when Esther lets her clothes drift out of the window, it symbolizes her busy, occupied life drifting out of her hands, and succumbing to a lesser state of mental health. Even in the beginning of the novel, Esther is mentally ill, but her illness intensifies as the novel progresses because during the summer, Esther is no longer required to do anything- she is not in New York, she does not have a job, and she is not accepted into the writing class that she intended to go to, so she could no longer defer her thoughts. A more notable use of symbolism in The Bell Jar happens to be the name of the novel. Esther sees herself in a “bell jar”, an enclosed jar blocking off her surroundings; she cannot reach the rest of the outside world, and is trapped in a tight space of her own depression. A final use of symbolism, perhaps the most powerful, is the character Joan Gilling. Joan is, symbolically, Esther’s mental illness. As Esther prepares to check out of her residential mental hospital, Joan hangs herself in the woods, symbolizing the death of Esther’s mental illness, and her recovery; “the bell jar would never descend on [her]…

A key symbol in the City of Ember is light. Without light the city would not be able to survive. Doon stated, “The lights go out all the time! And the shortages, there’s shortages of everything! And no one does anything about it, something terrible is going to happen!”(13). Doon worries that the civilians will run out of everything and he is angry because no one realizes it.There is only unnatural light in the city so if the lamps go out the people would not be able to see since they are living underground. Light symbolizes the issues in Ember, and how it is a dystopian society.…

As the narrator describes the rosebush, he offers a rose to the reader “to symbolize some sweet moral blossom that may be found along the track, or relieve the darkening close of a tale of human frailty and sorrow,” (Hawthorne 42). This foreshadows the story will be forlorn. The rose is an offer to comfort the reader at the end of a disheartening novel. The rosebush also symbolizes life and beauty surrounded by a dreary world of sorrow. Outside of the prison door, the lively rosebush grows next to many weeds. This shows a truly beautiful flower can arise from a complete barren region. The rosebush is mentioned again later in the novel. At the governor’s house, “Pearl, seeing the rosebushes, began to cry for a red rose, and would not be pacified,” (Hawthorne 95). This carries over from the symbolism in chapter one. Although Pearl acts like a child of the devil, filled with darkness and mystery, she can be sweet and delicate by holding a single rose.…

Burton uses lighting to show fantasy and reality in his movies. In the film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory high key lighting represents fantasy. The lighting is used in Willy Wonka’s factory showing that it is every kid’s dream to visit it. Although it is his fantasy, Charlie knows that a fantasy is all it ever will be. To represent this low key lighting is used in Charlie’s home to show that the reality of his life is there living in poverty. This pattern continues in the cult classic Edward Scissorhands. The town that Edward is welcomed into is in high lighting to signify that it is the life that he never had. He wants to be accepted and loved and this is the place that his wish comes true. Unfortionatly we know that his fantasy is unrealistic and there is no way he can live normally. His sad life he must live is inside an empty mansion which is shot in low lighting signifying the lonely reality of his home. Lighting gives you an idea of what is real and what is only a fantasy.…

There are many symbolic meanings in the Song of Solomon. In the novel, the white peacock is a representation of Milkman's journey to flight/freedom.
