Compose your own response. West Point and the Army are committed to the idea that respect for others and an understanding of diversity are important leadership traits. Why will you be successful in working with leaders, peers, and subordinates of a gender, color, ethnicity, and/or religion different from your own?

Having the right attitude in working with the diversified group is most important. It is important to have the abilities to understand what other people think and respect to their opinions. During my time at the Royal Thai Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School, I had to live, study and work with other new students, a diversified group of students from family backgrounds, education, social aspects and languages. As part of the team, I learned to overcome the differences by working together with them to achieve the goal as assigned by commanders. I also observed that everyone had his own opinions and in many occasions, the differences help to develop and create new ideas, improve the quality of work and help the group to achieve better results. Abilities to communicate between the officers and team are also crucial among the diversified group. To maintain the chain of command and build a team work, effective communication is needed. I worked with a diversified group of pre cadets as an assistant section leader when I had to carefully consider all ??? because it was important to respect both friends’ opinions and commanders’ orders, in order to find the best overall solution. In cases of disagreement among friends, persuasive skills, proper judgment and timely decision are needed to ensure that the command is still carried out. Now studying in America, the differences are broader. In my dormitory, there are Koreans, Americans, Chinese and Hispanics. I encounter even more diversities in nationalities, thoughts, cultures, languages and religions. To break the ice in the diversified group, I engaged in activities like sports to

Many of us may ask, "What is Cultural Diversity?" "Cultural Diversity tends to be broadly defined in its current use in organizations to include a variety of races, genders, ages, ethnicities, classes, sexual preferences, physical abilities and religions." (Fine, 1) "A study by Professor Joseph J. DeStefano of the University of Western Ontario and Martha L. Maznerski of the University of Virginia suggests that diversity in and of itself is not responsible for how well a team works together." So then, what makes a team work together? One contribution to a great team is how well they have achieved integration. For example, do they communicate clearly, solve differences in a constructive way and do they generate innovative solutions.…

Leadership is the ability to influence others to accomplish the mission and task at hand. This consists of many profound characteristics, such as adaptability, communication, and selfless service. Adaptability is the ability to adapt to the constant changing environment to overcome the situation or issue at hand. Being able to adapt and overcome allows you to strategically have the upper hand in a hostile setting. Communication with your soldiers is also an essential quality of leadership. Clear communication allows orders and information to be understood by everyone. In order to have clear communication an officer must adapt the ability to talk to every individual soldier because not everyone absorbs information the same way. Selfless service is the next critical quality needed. This characteristic causes a leader to go the extra mile for the welfare of his/her country without seeking self-recognition for their actions. If an officer doesn’t possess selfless service they would lose the ability to empower soldiers under their leadership, thus causing the loss of respect and ambition to reach full potential. Here are the foundation characteristics that uphold the quality of leadership of an Army officer.…

Throughout my undergraduate program, there were many times when I had to work in diverse groups. The most important part about working in a diverse group is treating everyone as an equal. This can be hard at times, however, there needs to be an understanding that not everyone in the group will have the same ideas. Having a diverse group is great though, because the group can look at things from more than one point of view. While at Capella University, I have had to write papers on working with diverse populations. The main ideas for the papers were to do research on the population in order to get a better understanding of the population. At the practicum in Atlanta, my partner was an African American woman from Africa. We each drew four pictures that would describe our lives and have to figure out what we were trying to talk about. It was an eye-opening experience that showed us even though we were brought up in diverse populations we all still had some similarities. I think it is important to find similar traits between diverse populations so a trusted relationship can…

In Japan, I attended the American School in Japan (ASIJ), a select, highly diverse international school an hour from downtown Tokyo. While I was young, I found it easy to appreciate attending school with expatriate students from different pockets of the world and being immersed in Japanese culture alongside my peers. Put simply, most students were inherently in the “same boat”, establishing common ground from which to form friendships. Differences in race, ethnicity, religion, and background were championed, even at a young age, and never…

Diversity in management is a major task. There are many aspects related to diversity, such as: culture, religion, and gender, just to name a few. It is important to remember that different people have different values and morals. Treating each person as an individual may be a difficult task for some managers. For managers who hire, hiring people with different backgrounds can enhance the team’s performance by introducing different perspectives and ideas. The planning process includes identifying how to integrate these ‘different’ people into the team. Ensuring the necessary resources are available to train and develop personnel based on their experience and education is a big part of organizing. Leading a team of diverse individuals can be quite interesting. Each person must be empowered and motivated to come to work and perform at his or her best. Controlling and monitoring each individual’s performance and how each person relates to others is mandatory for the team to be cohesive.…

    Team Communication

A major obstacle for team members is the lack of basic communication. Without communication team success is highly unlikely. Interaction is important, as it shows how team members work together to accomplish tasks and perform effectively. Communication is especially important to coordinate and cooperate with other team members to achieve collective goals. "Being an effective team player calls for frequent and extensive communication" (Hughes, 2003, p. 22). Once individuals recognize the importance of communication, they become aware of how successful communication can be. "Skillful communicators think like mediators, focused on mutually desirable outcomes as opposed to winning at all costs. Relationships are important to them, and they recognize the need to tailor their comments to the listener in order to be heard" (McCarthy, 2007, p. 6). Members should actively communicate and encourage each member to participate. Every member of the team should also be allowed to state their ideas, give suggestions and express their opinions. This allows every one to engage in open discussion. Valuing each others differences and viewpoints allows every one to feel part of the team. In turn, members believe they are a valuable member and can contribute to the team 's task. "Members contribute to the success of the team by using their unique skills and talents" (Bragg, 1999, ¶ 6). Once ideas are presented and individual skills are identified, the team can establish each member 's role and individual tasks. Team members can work on tasks and communicated…
