Sample VTCSOM Personal Statement
First and foremost, I would like to express my gratitude for your continued consideration of my application to Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. Second, I would like to update the Admissions Committee with a new activity that was discussed with my interviewer, but not included in my application. It is my hope that this letter explains why I am a good fit for VTCSOM and how I will use my experiences and qualities to contribute to your mission of creating physician thought leaders.

At the core of a physician thought leader is the ability to see and treat the patient as a whole. Since graduation, I have completely dedicated myself to caring for others in this way, whether it is when serving patients undergoing breast reconstructive surgeries or when helping uninsured individuals monitor their chronic illnesses as a volunteer. The curriculum design and longitudinal ambulatory care experience serve as a testament to VTCSOM’s values that I hold to the same high regard.

From my wealth of clinical experiences, I understand

Working in the healthcare field has given me an appreciation for each person’s role in the holistic care of the patient. Similarly, my past research experiences showed me how to be an effective member of a research team, and that I thrive in this type of collaborative environment. I hope to share these skills with the VTCSOM community, and continue to learn more through the Interprofessional Learning program.

Lastly, I want to attend an institution that sees research as an integral part of being a physician thought leader. Through my past involvement in clinical neurology and neuroimmunology, I found a passion for scientific investigation and a desire to explore it further in medical school and beyond. The newly expanded VTC Research Institute will provide me with endless research and mentorship opportunities to do

A significant reason I continued cheerleading in college was my desire for a team environment and support system of upperclassmen to look up to and underclassmen to provide a fresh look. Feinberg’s team-based care model is most conducive to the type of environment off which I have thrived my entire life. Moreover, as many of my endeavors have been inspired by the mentorships of my coaches and principle investigator, I look forward to building a similar enriching relationship with a long-term mentor in medical school. Furthermore, longitudinal aspects of FSM’s Health and Society portion stand out as they focus on the very components that drive my passion for the field. Through my personal spiritual journey, exercise hobbies, and experience mentoring…

Interprofessional education is essential in all fields including nursing, allopathic physicians, osteopathic physicians, pharmacy, dentistry, etc. In order for this to be effective, interprofessional education must begin at the entry level of each perspective field of healthcare. Collaboration between healthcare fields begins with a mutual respect for each discipline. This can be achieved by working together on projects that promote a common goal. When experiences produce good outcomes, then interprofessional collaboration is enhanced. As DNPs, these experiences promote the nursing profession by encouraging and/or inspiring nurses with lower degrees to achieve the same level of respect for other disciples. Ever since I transferred to the University of Miami as an undergrad, I have had the gratification and honor to meet and work with various remarkable people, from physicians to scientists and staff. Doing research and shadowing at Miami Miller School of Medicine gave me the prospect to admire how marvelous the school and its community are. Furthermore, I have had the satisfaction to meet several professors who teach at the medical school and the prospect of learning from them is enticing. Being able to experience first-hand the compassion and care that the doctors at Miller demonstrate their patients have also confirmed that this school is not short of role models for me to follow. My career goals are very straightforward. I’ve taken several steps in high school to accomplish these goals by being well disciplined in my studies, and participating in a Health Careers Internship Program. This program offers me a variety of opportunities that make me a more applicable in a healthcare setting. I’ve done also done volunteer work in a Geriatric setting, at the St. Benedict nursing home in St. Cloud. Weill Cornell Medical College is known for its innovators who have brought to life cutting-edge tests and procedures like Dr. Papanicolaou’s Pap Smear that revolutionized the early detection and prevention of cervical cancer and Dr. Schiff’s “deep brain stimulation” therapy for patients in minimally conscious state. I believe that Weill Cornell's dedication to collaboration and teamwork has led to a legacy of excellence and I would be honored for the opportunity to learn and grow as an aspiring physician-scientist in this environment. I am interested in participating in the small group Problem-Based Learning sessions in the curriculum that facilitate communication, knowledge sharing and learning among peers. Moreover, the many research opportunities within the Weill Cornell/Rockefeller/Sloan-Kettering Tri-Institutional MD PhD Program and its affiliation with neighboring hospitals excites me.…
