EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Background:
Over the years, the Government of India has launched several programmes to encourage sports in the country. However, we are yet to achieve a place of pride in international sports. We are lagging much behind even among the Asian countries. This indicates that implementation of sports programmes in the country leaves for much space for progress. Cricket is a bat-and-ball sport introduced to India by the British. It is a sport that can be enjoyed by a wide variety of people. This sport also has a very clear relation with politics. Cricket has been around for quite some time, and as we can see, it became increasingly popular throughout the early to mid-1950s. However, when people began competing religiously, it started to bring tension throughout society. It created political issues as well. However, there are multiple problems that arose, and they include social conflicts and disagreements (Documents 1, 4, and 6), religious issues (Documents 5, 7, 8 and 9), and culture (Documents 2, 3 and 10).…

As a nation of over one billion souls, I feel sorry and totally embarrassed to think that India is nowhere on the top in the world of sports and, in fact, it is somewhere on the bottom. There was a time before and after independence, my country - a country that I love, cherish and never thought of leaving to make a permanent home elsewhere in this wide planet - was for a considerable period of time a dominant force in hockey.…

Sport as a whole in Britain is perceived as a positive influence, this has been true for decades from the FIFA World Cup win in 1966 to the recent success of the London 2012 Olympics. The importance of the subject is clear to see with the amount of governing bodies and funding that is put into sport, for example, Youth Sport Trust and Sport England. Using Sport England as an example, the organisation currently focuses on encouraging a sporting habit for life. From 2012 they will be investing over £1 billion of National Lottery and Treasury funding until 2017. The amount of funding clearly shows how highly sport is valued by the government.…

The Federal Government supports the funding of sport in Australia and allocates approximately One Hundred and sixteen million Dollars a year to develop sport throughout the country. The social status and popularity of various sports in Australia can be determined to an accurate degree on the figures of funding for these sports. In 1984, the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) was created by the federal government to provide a more “coordinated approach to sports development in Australia” (Amezdroz, pg. 508). The ASC is granted just over $118 million (www.ausport.gov.au) by the government, which is distributed to the elite and grass root levels of 100 different sports, based on factors of participation and popularity. The ASC has two main goals in development of sport in Australia; increased…

“Its assessment of the need to promote and achieve world class sporting performance and excellence and to promote the UK as a venue for major international sporting events, and its priorities for the time being for addressing them” (UK Sport, A C B Ramsey 2007) There is a main divide in the development of sport and the development through sport. This divide is that the development of sport looks at getting people involved in sport whereas the development through sport links social factors in sport together creating a healthy social capital.…
