Routines In Health Care That Seem To Be Inefficient
Based on the scientific management theory, what are some of the routines in health care that seem to be inefficient? What examples of participative decision making exist in your workplace? Provide your rationale.
Examples of workplace management can be traced back to as early as the 1700 's (Mindtools.com 2015.) It wasnt until the early 1900 's that Fredrick Taylor utilized the scientific method to analyze workplace productivity. He believed that working people as hard as they could was not as efficient as optimizing the way work was done. Taylor introduced systematic selection and training procedures, provided a way to study workplace efficiency, and encouraged the idea of systematic organizational design.The Principles of Taylor 's Scientific Management Theory can still be seen today in our workplace. According to Mindtools.com, 2015, the four Principles of Scientific Management are:

1. use the scientific method to study work and determine the most efficient way to perform specific tasks.
2. match workers to their jobs based on capability and motivation, and train them to work at maximum efficiency.
3. Monitor worker performance, and provide instructions and supervision

As healthcare is trends towards cost effective healthcare, healtcare providers are practicing not what is best for the patinet, but what the insuracne thinks is most cost effective. Many times medicaions are not approved and a "close" substitution has to be used or an alternative needs to be looked into. Also the delay in care that results from being required to see your primary physican (which may take a few weeks) lets say for abdominal pain, to get a referal to the specialist, wait for the insurance company to approve the referal, then wait a few more weeks to see the

    Scientific management, which is said to of been made by Frederick Taylor who first did time and motion studies, is the first management style out of the three and was mostly used in the early 1900s. (Peak, 2012). The focus of scientific management laid down the fundamental principles of large-scale manufacturing through assembly-line factories. It emphasized standardization and rationalization of work through division of labor, time and motion studies, and measurement. This was also known as “Taylorism.” (Backer, 1998). In Frederick’s early days, he worked in the steel mills and was eventually hired as chief engineer. After years of working he became interested in coming up with different methods for greater productivity in workers, so he recommended giving hourly breaks among other methods.     Scientific Management was developed by Frederick Taylor as a means of replacing old ‘rule of thumb’ methods with scientific methods for best and rational design of optimising any task which would lead to enhanced productivity and profitability. Scientific management (also called Taylorism) concerns four primary principles of: developing scientific methods, thoughtful selection of labour, education and development of labour, and, specialisation and collaboration between managers and labour. Utilising scientific management methods means that every step of production is calculated using motion and output with human movement. When every step of production is premeditated and accounted for – this leads to standardisation of work practices and, tools, equipment and materials, as well as enhanced use of resources and reduced wastage. On the human side, work is broken down into smaller parts or segments that are easier to manage as workers skills at the workplace become highly specialised. Detailed instructions and even training is provided to workers reducing the amount of time wasted and enhancing quality of work. Prior to scientific management workers would work as best they could using the best tools they had. Also departments such as planning and design, personnel, maintenance and quality control did not exist.
