George Elton Mayo (1880 -1949)
Mayo had discovered a fundamental concept. Working places should be like as a social environments and good relationship should be maintained between all the workers. People are motivated by much more than self-interest.
Mayo concluded that workers are best motivated by: Better communication between managers and workers
Greater manager involvement in employees working lives
Working in groups or teams.
In practice therefore businesses should re-organise production to encourage greater use of team working and introduce personnel departments to encourage greater manager involvement in looking after employees’ interests.     Groups and teams can be defined as, any number of individuals that interact together. When a group is maturing, the number of individuals decreases, when it gets to a stage where there is a high level of group cohesiveness due to commitment and trust among members, it then becomes a team. In short, in this style employees are expected to do their assigned work, but it is also anticipated that they can contribute by sharing their ideas related to that work. While in many ways the behaviors of systems managers are like the behaviors of human relations managers, the big difference is the former are not likely to accept all the assumptions underlying human relations management.
