My mom yelled “it’s time to get ready Thomas” I got changed into my baseball clothes. I got my baseball bag and told me mom goodbye as I was heading out the door. When I went to the entrance of where everybody was at it was locked. I throw my bag over the fence. When I finished climbing over the fence I bolted to my team. When I got there I was late and my coach told me “Go practice with somebody.” and then he pointed over at the group of people. “Can I practice with you?” I asked one of my teammates. The coach started to walk over to me and asked me “Do you think you can play?” I replied “Yes.” “You can play right field.” I jogged over there I stopped and then the dizziness started up again. I was playing dodge ball. Usually I'm not very good at it, but one day, I was the last one on the court, and someone threw the ball at me. At that moment, I felt like the end was near. I heard mixed yells from my friends; yells of "Run" and "Catch it!" I almost felt the ball hitting my face as it was coming toward me! I closed my eyes! I heard a loud bang, not unlike a ball hitting someone. First, there was silence, then yells and cheers! I didnt't feel any pain. I realised that since I hadn't felt any pain, I had probably died. Well, I lived a good life. It had seemed that my death had been inevidable to me. I opened my eyes and looked down, expecting to see my body, lying on the floor. but it wasn't. 'That's strange', I thougt, I looked at…

It was the middle of an away sophomore baseball game against DeWitt. My brother, Keegan, was up to bat. The pitch came, he swung and down he went. The baseball came off his bat and drilled him in the left eye. There was only one parent there, one of Keegan’s teammate’s dad. He drove Keegan to the hospital and called my parents. At the time, I was at a softball game working the scoreboard for the varsity West Delaware Hawks team. My mom called to tell me my grandma would pick me up when I was done and that her and my dad were on their way to the Iowa City hospital. My dad was at work at the time and met my mom there. They would explain more later. After they got down there and I got home with my sisters, I called my mom. She gave me an explanation…

The hot sun was beating down on my neck as I was picking weeds in a field. The humidity is so thick you could cut it with a knife. The smell of grass was in the air. My soft hands were getting blistered. My skin had been browned as it was covered in dirt. I hated my parents for making me do this. A man comes over and asks me to make sure that I don’t miss any. This man was my grandfather. My parents had me dropped me off while they were at my sister's softball game. I was stuck working with my grandfather for the day. He had owned two houses right next to each other, each with a large lot that needed to be maintained. There was a lot of weeds to be picked. This scene happened all too often when I was younger. I did not like this at the time and hated my parents for making me do this work. But working with my grandfather taught me character and work ethic. He himself was a hard worker and wanted me to be like him. I did not understand this at the time and just did not want to be there. In the long run I learned a lot of valuable skills from my grandfather and he became one my most influential role models.…

It is the bottom of the ninth and I was last at bat. The ball came zooming towards me at a high rate of speed. The vibration of metal meeting leather rang out in my hands. No hesitation was made. I dropped the bat and ran as fast as I could to first base. My coach was telling me to keep going because the ball was fumbled. I rounded third base and my coach motioned for me to take it home with a slide. Down I went. Dust was flying. The crowd was standing and cheering loudly as the referee motions and yells, “Safe!” All I heard was screaming as dust still loomed the air around me. I could manage to see my team going wild, jumping, and screaming. Everyone seemed to be celebrating except me.…

I never used to write. In fact, I didn’t much like it. Little did I know that writing would become obsolete and a physiological requirement for the well being of my life. From an early age on all I did was read. I grew up in an isolated environment where books were my escape, and escape was necessary from the hardships of home. I remember being a young seven-year-old boy wearing a pillowcase around my neck fastened with a pen. I was eating animal crackers at the time, and my step dad was calling out for me. I stood up from my crouched position and raised my hand as I learned from pre-school, and said, “ I’m here daddy.” At that moment my step father grabbed me by the cape harshly compressing my trachea purposefully, shaking me back and forth with his hands around my neck as I began to choke on the appetizing cracker animal crumbs within the back of my throat. I didn’t understand at the time what was really going on. My mother came out of the room and my dad acted as if nothing happened and told me to…

“Taryn, go put rocks in your dad’s shoes.” I recall only briefly the words of one of my dad’s coworkers encouraging me to play a joke on my dad. Being that I was only a little girl at the time I only remember this vaguely. Looking back, I loved rocks, bugs, leaves, mud, dirt, worms, anything and everything Mother Nature had to offer. I had a connection with the outdoors and I still do today. Nature is my happy place.…

As I was running to first I looked up to find where I had hit the ball. I watched it bounce off the top of the fence and come back into the ballpark. As I came around first base my coach was yelling at me to go to second, but as I stepped on the bag I felt a sharp pain in my left foot. I kept running but not very fast. I made it to second, and when I got there my foot hurt incredibly bad. The next batter was able to get a base hit, and I scored from second, even though my foot was killing me.…

    My Baseball Moment

It was a week away and surprisingly I was calm for the upcoming event. Usually I would be nervous from the top of my head all the way down to the bottom of my toes, but I had so much confidence that it was inspiring to others. Knowing that the big day was 2 days away, of course I had to go out and buy new equipment so I could not play the part, but also look the part. Shortly after buying a new Nike helmet, Swingman batting gloves and a brand new solid pro maple SamBat I immediately went to the cages. The bat had the biggest sweet spot and the most pop out of all my bats. The ball hitting of the barrel sounded like gunshots. I felt like taking a million swings, but I knew if I stayed there for a long time I would be a little tired for the big day so I only took 100 swings and called it a day. Finally the next day I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock with the mindset of determination. I quickly got dressed in the proper sports attire and fled out the house with my brother. On the way there I had the speakers on blast playing the most inspiring and highest BPM songs I had on my play-list. After arriving to the parking lot I had walked to the front entrance of the stadium where they had given me a shirt with a specific number and a cap so it could be worn on the field. After suiting up and taking the first step on the field, the amazing view of the inside of a baseball stadium had me speechless. Knowing that professionals play here too had me feeling proud that I was doing something with my life and that hopefully it was going to lead me somewhere better. Before starting all the drills and the showcasing of the performance of the players, the commissioner of the league had a few words to say. Shortly after the speech was done, we had finally started to begin! Everyone was split into different groups. Some kids were hitting, some were pitching, and some were taking ground balls. I was put into the hitting…
