Roles, Responsibilities and Boundaries in the Teaching
Theory Task 1 – Roles, Responsibilities and Boundaries in the Teaching /Training Cycle

Level 3: Describe what your role, responsibilities and boundaries would be as a teacher in terms of the teaching/training cycle.

If we look at the definition of each term, we can see how they differ.
Role: the function assumed or part played by a person in a particular situation. Responsibilities: a thing which one is required to do as part of a job, role or legal obligation. Boundaries: A limit of something abstract, especially a subject or sphere of activity.

The teacher/training cycle helps identify any special needs, preferred learning styles, learners motivations, learners previous educational experiences and the organisations needs which will help me with my learners.

1. Identify Needs - This focuses on finding the needs of the learners, preparing a scheme of work and lesson plans to deliver group or individual learning based upon the needs of the learners. As a Maths GCSE teacher, an interview and assessment prior to acceptance on the course allows me to identify the learner needs.

2. Plan and Design – It is my responsibility to plan the course, which in turn meets the needs of the learners and fulfils the requirements of the course. I would be responsible for preparing the classroom and delivering the course to learners and I would need to ensure that the learning outcomes, aims and objectives for the course are covered in an appropriate way. I would do this by allocating enough time to different topics; some topics are more difficult than others and so would require more time.

3. Deliver – This requires me to teach and deliver the course in a suitable manner, ensuring I remain professional at all times and my learners are engaged. The resources I provide should be well prepared, sufficient for the number of learners and used to support the learning activities. I would do PowerPoint presentations and ensure all students are given a copy of the notes. Learners would be told at the start of each session what the lesson objectives are and how these relate to the overall course outcomes.

In this assignment I will be looking at the five stages of the teaching cycle. I will also identify the legislative requirements and codes of practise that directly impact on teaching and the learning environment. The cycle can be followed by teacher and learner alike and must be followed for learning to be truly effective as described in the following quote: Ann Gravells (2008: 27) “It’s called as cycle as you can start at any point, but you must follow through all the other points for teaching and learning to be effective.”…

    1. Identify Needs - Identifying needs of your students is targeting individuals on the course who may struggle or have a disability for e.g. dyslexia. The reason why you do this is so you can take that extra little bit of time out to help that person or to have someone assist them like an agency who can help them on that course. You also need to identify the background you are going to be working in whether it is private firm, community, college or institution. This helps you target what you will need for that course.…
