Role of Artist in Society
What is the Role of an Artist in Society?

The above question raises three questions in my mind, Question 1: who is artist? Question 2: Does everything which an artist creates comes in art? And am I the right person to answer this question?

For me artist is the person who enlightens people with thoughts, who creates or helps to create good art, which reflects realism and projects awareness in society. An artist should be a person people look at.

Taking an example: why is a movie like Frost\Nixon by Ron Howard considered art? It reflects reality back to us; the story portrays legendary battle between Richard Nixon, and David Frost, confronting the questions of his time in office and the Watergate scandal that ended his presidency. The movie delves into the controversy and helps educate the Americans as to who involved in the Watergate conspiracy.

Artist with their creative superiority at times involves into the sorrows of society and make people come face to face with the cruelty of their surroundings. This is done in a creative and often beautiful fashion.

An artist has the liberty to be subtle and in-your-face at the same time. Take the Dadaist artists for example. They brought out the post-war frustration through their senseless yet overloaded with content art. They kick off a revolution and did not get questioned for it because they had the caring companion of labeling their hatred as ‘art’. An artist is the one who can create meaning even with destruction and the Dadaist artists did just that.

Art highlights the awful elements of a society in unsympathetic visual and audio representation and still manages to mix a reaction. Artists play an important role in the social construction of a community. Artists are craftsmen who play with art and improve the discontent in communities due to social evils like corruption, crime etcetera.

Artists think on a completely different level and many a times they are misunderstood and disliked, but that has not stopped art from flourishing. Art is an escape and artists in every society help the common people. Artists are our saviors in unruly attire.

“Artist is not, complex philosophical thoughts, but the one who crafts art in people’s way of understanding”

Many artists enjoy exploring new ideas and concepts and creating them. Most artists think of themselves in one or more of the roles when approaching their art work. First, artists believe they are helping people to see the world in new and innovative ways. Secondly, they believe they are making a visual record of places, people, and events of their time and place (Sayre, 2009). Third, they are making functional objects and buildings more pleasurable and giving them meaning, and finally, artists believe they are giving form to immaterial ideas and things (Sayre, 2009).…

What defines a work as “pop culture?” And conversely, what defines a work as “art?” What magical quality distinguishes the seemingly unremarkable projects of Bay, Warhol, and Collins from the prestigious masterpieces of Welles, Rembrandt, and Tolstoy? Popular culture is the ocean in which the arts swim, and when one contemplates and examines “the arts” it is done in a world defined by popular culture. (Or, in cultural theory terms, popular culture is the Other, for the arts — the thing the arts supposedly are not.) In this definition, it is stated, implicitly or explicitly, that the arts are something different. This difference between art and pop culture is its ability to overcome social divisions and inspire true emotion and change in the…

Artist will usually have their image or idea embedded into paintings, dances, songs or even poems. These artists are trying to make a symbolic statement through their artwork and sometimes their arts document and convey a vast array of their own experience of life. Very good point However, art changes through time and the symbolic statement made by artists back in their days might not be understood by the modern generation and these arts will start to lose value. Music is the perfect example. The music trend changes through time. Bee Gees used to be a very popular musical group and everyone in the 60’s and 70’s knew them. As time passes, the group faces stiff competition from new and younger artists. It cannot be denied that Bee Gees is one of the most successful groups of all time, but no one can stay popular forever as art changes through time. To the older generation of 60’s and 70’s, the playing of Bee Gees music on radio recalls good old memories but the younger generation would seem to think that Bee Gees can no longer be the voice of their generation and prefer other genre of music. Being innovative or original at a certain era would bring an artist success, but these successes do…
