Ikea: Ad Master

The attached ad is one for Ikea. The ad itself contains the word ikea, albeit the letters are mixed, and a simple phrase, “Assemble yourself”. The ad plays on Ikea’s reputation. Most people know Ikea because of the fairly cheap furniture and the fact that you have to put them together. The colour scheme of this ad is in line with the simple blue and yellow branding that all whom are familiar with Ikea would recognize.

The target audience for this ad are mostly people going through transitions in their lives. By this I mean, first moving out of their parents house, midlife crisis, etc. However, I think it hits harder with young adults who are just leaving for college. The reason why I targeted such a specific group of people is because they are about to buy furniture for the first time. Not only this, but they are also free to explore who they are gonna be. This ad not only has humor, but there is a slightly sentimental idea hidden in the message. This is the first time where they get to create who they become. With Ikea’s message of “Assemble yourself.”, it brings to mind the image of actually creating who you want to be. So to those who are entering this tumultuous place, Ikea seems like the perfect place to make a new you. This I think is the most effective part of the ad.

This also fits in with the American dream. Many people came to America in search of new lives, to become new people. Ikea plays on this as seen in the previous paragraph. Ikea sells the idea of ‘assembling’ a new you. Just like in America, you have the freedom to be whoever you want to be at Ikea.

Overall, this ad was fairly effective. If I was in the targeted audience, I think I would begin shopping at Ikea. It’s interesting that the deeper I looked into the ad the more I seemed to find within it. The message was heavily hidden, and it came to me suddenly, while I wasn’t even looking at the ad. I would assume that if I wasn’t looking specifically for any message, I would have subconsciously eaten it

    The advertisement has a very good focal point. When first viewing the advertisement, you are immediately drawn to the photo of the man standing on top of the skyscraper. This photo supports the key message of the ad: that your business can stand out in Rancho Cucamonga. The ad is mostly readable.     I would say that this ad uses some rhetorical appeals effectively, but lacks some as well. For example, it uses very strong pathos. Having the child looking into an empty fridge that looks very run down and not well kept. There is not a single food item in it. Also, the setting of the picture looks like it is not a well-kept area.
