Growing up, I led somewhat of a sheltered life in a moderately conservative Christian home so using drugs was neither an option I explored or even considered. My mother is abstinent when it comes to alcohol and my father had an occasional beer during the summer when fishing but other than that I was pretty much naïve when it came to any type of substance abuse. My adolescent years and also teenage years were spent in the 70’s and the 80’s; a time when Mothers against Drunk Driving was incorporated alongside Nancy Reagan’s “Just Say No” program. Public service announcements depicting what life on illicit drugs were like flooded the television airways. The 80’s hair bands videos of Poison, Ratt, and Van Halen, etc. shown on MTV depicted a life of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Music is a highly influential medium and it affected me like many others of my generation. Then, as now, it was implied that to have a good time one must partake in specific substances if one was to enjoy life. I have God and my mother to thank for not allowing me to sink too far before coming back from the brink. Proverbs 22:6 asserts, “Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it” (NASB). I am a living testament to that
