Research Paper On Prescription Drug Abuse
Prescription drug abuse happens whenever someone is using a medication in a manner other than for the use for which it was prescribed, for the experience provided by the medication, or without a proper prescription. Painkillers are by far the most commonly abused prescription drugs, and they’re relatively easy to obtain. Consequently, prescription drug addiction is not all that uncommon. About one in five Americans (https://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/research-reports/prescription-drugs/director) aged twelve and older has used prescription drugs for recreational purposes at some point in their lifetime.

Prescription drug treatment programs can help those who find themselves addicted to prescription meds. The key to recovery lies in understanding how the addiction is triggered and what can be done to treat it.

However, addiction is still a problem in the United States. Most who find themselves becoming addicted to and abusing prescription medicines reach that point because they used the drugs in a way other than recommended by their doctor. This can happen in a variety of ways, including increasing the dosage to get stronger affects (often the case with painkillers) or taking the medicine more frequently with no other goal in mind other than getting high. Opioid pain relievers, anti-anxiety medicines, and ADHD prescriptions like Adderall and Ritalin are some of the most commonly misused drugs.

In recognizing the indications of prescription drug abuse, whether it be for yourself or someone you care about, it should be remembered that every person reacts differently and every drugs produces varying effects. The patient must drink or take the pill in front of a person to ensure that it will not get out onto the streets and be abused (New drug treats the new face of addiction. 2008). If there is someone out there that may be in need of help they can go to their family doctor and discuss the options and outcomes of this problem. When speaking with the doctor it is very important that the patient is very honest and open about their problem. The doctor will address the situation and go from there. There are counseling programs that a patient can enroll in so they have someone to talk to about their history and problems.
