Research Paper On Friar Lawrence
In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Two star crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, fall in love. Friar Lawrence married the two, while ignoring the fact that bad things may occur in the future. As time progresses, the lives of Romeo and especially Juliet worsen. I, Lord Capulet, believe that Friar Lawrence should be sentenced to prison for criminal negligence. Friar Lawrence married Juliet and Romeo together knowing that bad things may happen. On top of that, he never even told us that he did. After marrying them, he gave Juliet a sleeping potion to deceive me and many others. That’s unacceptable! Not only that, Friar Lawrence committed perjury for not telling us the truth about Romeo and Juliet until it was too late. Illegally, Friar Lawrence

    First of all, this choice is selfless on his part because he is willing to lose respect in order to end the feud, but this choice was also not a wise choice. By letting the two marry, he is also putting the children in bad positions because his plan for the families’ feud to end may not work, thus threatening the relationship between Romeo and his parents, Juliet and her parents, and the families’ hatred to one another all together. Eventually, complications in his plans occur, such as Romeo’s banishment, and Juliet’s engagement to Paris. So, Friar Lawrence ends up concentrating on Romeo and Juliet’s love and discarding the thought of ending the feud. He opens many windows and creates many opportunities for the couple so that they can be together; this outlines his role in the play. Friar Lawrence provides methods for Romeo and Juliet to reunite, by giving Juliet an elixir to fake her death, and attempting to get Romeo (whom he sent to Mantua) to meet her in her tomb where she would awaken, and hence they would live “happily ever after”. The characters think that fate prevents them from taking action and punishes them for inactions. After the Montagues and Capulets see the bodies of Romeo and Juliet, the Prince declares that fate punishes the families for the brawls, and punishes him “for winking at [their] discords” (Shakespeare 241). The Prince believes that fate decided to punish him by killing “his dear blood”, Mercutio (Shakpeare 129). This suggests that the Prince uses “[the] [heavens]” as a scapegoat so he can comfort himself by the thought that he did not directly cause Mercutio’s death.
