Considering this student has not had the opportunity to spend adulthood with her grandparents or great-grandparents, she does not have the experience of spending time with the older generation. She has never met her great-grandparents and both her maternal and paternal grandparents died before she was 20. Her mother died a few months after turning 60 but this student doesn’t consider that as being elderly. With that being said, this student can only relate to older adults from a distant-relationship point of view. This simple means her relationship with the older adult population is a world perspective view.…
Friendship is a distinctly human trait and has been the subject of numerous studies. It has always posed a problem in how to define friendship as it can mean different things to different people. However one aspect of friendship that was relatively overlooked and under researched was that of friendship between children. that is until the studies that will be discussed in this essay. This essay will look at two pioneering studies that focussed on children's friendships. It will look at any similarities and differences in approach, the unusual methods employed by the researchers and assess some of the strengths and the weaknesses of each. It will also discuss their findings and what relevance their work has today.…
Different cultures hold different perspectives toward a relationship between a man and a woman. Some people say that a woman and a man cannot be plainly friends; however, others do believe in the existence of such relationship. In the article written by William Deresiewicz, “A man, a woman, just friends,” some opinions root out in the support of one idea. In the article, William Deresiewicz uses an example of a movie known as When Harry Met Sally to explain his opinion against man-woman friendship. However, this paper adopts the thesis that a man and a woman can be friends and nothing more. In my opinion, women and men can be just friends without any further…
In my family and community protecting their interest and needs was essential to maintaining personal and professional relationships. Developing a friendship required more the geographical nearness or shared interest (e.g. sports, entertainment, religion, politics, etc.) enough those components are significant to learning more about a person and having something to talk about. Disagreements or agreements, a person must know what their potential friend values. For example, two people can have differing opinions on every subject, but if they believe that loyalty is the key to a relationship then all these non-denominators are not a factor. They will develop a shared interest (e.g. safety, health, well being, occupation, etc.). However, two people who agree on every subject, but one believes loyalty is key and the other things it is when it is necessary, then relationship will remain in the acquaintance stage rather than developing into…

This is a qualitative report using thematic analysis to explore the perspective and understating of friendship of a young adult. The participant was a female university student, Shazia. The data was the transcript and a 15-minute video of a semi-structured interview and after a process, of coding, general themes were formed. These themes were culture, growing up, and activities. The themes were then categorized under the umbrella of the overarching theme of developing and maintaining friendship by growing, sharing, and exchanging. By analyzing the transcript, it was discovered that Shazia and her close friends shared and exchanged their cultures, experiences, maturities, and activities in order for their friendships to remain strong and this outcome is supported by some studies. Further research is suggested for maintaining a friendship…

Research reports a commonly held perception that relationships deteriorate unless those involved work to keep them together (Stafford, 2003). Idea initially developed for romantic relationships it has now been applied to friendships (Canary et al., 1993. However Wiseman (1986) reports that the friendship bond is ‘exceedingly fragile when compared with other more institutionalized relationships. This relationship aims to further determine the perception of friendship between University students and various peers and explore how the strength of the relationship is expressed through a language of physical attachment.…
A dictionary definition defines friendship as an attachment from mutual esteem, and a friend as someone who is loving or attached to another. As an adult it can seem easy to define who are friends are, they are like minded individuals whom we share common interests with, people we trust and socialize with. Other people within our adult life are associates, work colleagues or general acquaintances. The category of friend is reserved for those whom we have developed a bond with and in most cases an emotional attachment to. However, when we consider this in relation to the nature of children's friendship this dictionary definition and an adults view of friendship may not hold true for all children. It also over simplifies the nature and dynamics involved in friendship. Barnes (2003, pg 49) highlights this when he discusses the many experiences children have of friendship, and the emotions and experiences these friendships expose children to, for example it affords them the opportunity to share experiences, develop communication and develop a sense of closeness to another person, however in contrast to this Barnes tells us that friendships in childhood introduces children to a to conflict situations and emotions such as jealousy, anger and loneliness. Best to leave a line space between…

Another factor that could possibly disintegrate a friendship is a difference in upbringing. Each home is different from the next and child has a different view of life. It is almost impossible for two people with different backgrounds to stay as friends. Early in the relationship, this clash of belief is regarded as source of humour. Nevertheless, as time goes by the jokes and comments seem to become less hilarious. There is scarcely any body without an ideal they hold dear above other notions, or a family situation, that is not normal. These ideals differ based on family…
