Reflective Essay On Leadership Philosophy
Introduction
At the beginning of this course there were three main themes to my leadership philosophy; communication, training, and fitness. I was uncertain about the influence that this course would have on my career, especially due to the rumors that this was geared towards a certain MOS. Now at the end of this course, I can admit that much of the course material are concepts I’ve never seen and probably never will. However, experiences and material that I have been exposed to during the last seven weeks have either reinforced my leadership philosophy, or caused me to reevaluate. There is something to learn in every situation.
Communication
Effective communication needs to be constant, clear, and constructive. Throughout the course the importance of this personal philosophy of mine has been consistently reinforced. One of the biggest complaints

Extended periods away from family can be stressful for both the Soldier and the family. This is something that is easily forgotten between redeployment and the next mission. This extra time away from my family has reminded me of the fact that the family is just as invested in a TDY or deployment as the Soldier. Because of this, I am refining my philosophy so that I will place emphasis on increasing the fitness levels of the Soldier and family. Not only will I focus on my own family, I am going to start training my Soldier’s in the concepts of balancing family life with Army life.
Conclusion
The leadership philosophy themes that I have valued throughout my career have gone largely unchallenged throughout my time in this course. Reflecting on those themes, especially training and fitness, has caused me to refine some of the beliefs I had. There is something to learn out of every situation. We may not have focused on MOS specific tasks, I think that just having the time to evaluate my philosophy and beliefs will make me a better

The first thought of what a leader is calls to mind the great leaders the world has seen in the past; for example, Aung San Suu Kyi is a prime example of a leader who literally gave up her own freedom to oppose military rule in Burma, or Myanmar, in order to gain a democratic rule. She, along with many other outstanding leaders are the people young leaders of today look up to which includes myself. Throughout high school I have a wonderful opportunity to participate in my school’s Marine Corps JROTC program which focuses on Leadership Education and preparing young leaders for the future. In my fourth year of high school, I have the greatest opportunity I have ever been offered before by being the MCJROTC program’s Cadet Commanding Officer.…

Through the first three weeks of this course I have been reminded of some previously learned concepts and introduced to others that have literally opened my eyes to what I already imagine will be a clear path to increased effectiveness and value as a leader. The Disc Management assessment helped set the stage by defining my inherent leadership style as Si. (Everything Disc Management Profile, 2014) This style is characterized by its bent toward collaboration, encouragement and support. I was encouraged by Jack’s statement in the book Winning as he pointed out that “leadership is not just about you – it’s about them”. (Welch, Jack, Winning, Chapter 5 – Leadership). These readings confirmed for me what I feel are my core strengths as a leader – collaborating, engaging team members, driving the vision home and celebrating the results. I have an innate ability to build rapport quickly and through that rapport start on a fast track with team members to build trust. I gave an example in one of our discussion threads of a specific time when I demonstrated my leadership ability. It was an instance where I lead a team of recruiters in our Services business segment in an effort to revamp our entire recruiting process to fall into compliance with a set of forthcoming government regulations that were eventually going to be mandated. The timeline was very tight and the stakeholders were numerous. By binging all of the team together and educating them on current stat, the tenants of the OFCCP, and the impact non-compliance would have on a company of our stature, I was able to get our entire team to buy into the vision of our future state and quickly get behind the effort to bring our practices into…

The three characteristics of leadership that I consider most valuable are (1) integrity, (2) humility, and (3) generosity. #1 integrity is defined as great sincerity, honesty, and virtue. Strength of character. All of these words describe great qualities that should be possessed or obtained in the individual or individuals considered to fill a leadership role with exceptional expectations! Great sincerity means that a person possesses honest, faithful, and genuine traits. Virtue is defined as moral excellence, morality, goodness, effectiveness of quality, purity and chastity, and innocence. #2 Humility, refers to being the condition or quality of being humble. #3 Generosity, to share or give without hesitation, unselfish, not mean or narrow-minded; forgiving!…

Running head Deployment and Military Families The Effects of Deployment on Military Families Chi Patrick PSYC 365 Dr. Barbara Boothe May 3, 2009 Abstract Military families deal with issues common to all families. However, military families are also subjected to unique stressors, such as frequent geographical relocations, frequent separations of service members from families, and subsequent reorganizations of family life during reunions. One of the most disruptive stressors military families can face is the reintegration following the deployment. There are several major tasks which face returning service members when reintegrating after deployment. This paper will define each task, review possible challenges and discuss tips on how families…

Breaking down my leadership qualities and traits and what kind I am the first thing that always comes to mind, is that I am one who still has a lot to learn and many skills to develop. Yes, I know that all of that will come with time but it remains a lingering thought letting me know that there is always room for constant improvement. That being said I would like to consider myself as a transactional leader. I greatly enjoy getting involved and checking in to ensure things are getting done right when the occasion calls for it. To include the added bonus of handing out rewards to the individuals that worked day in and day out to uphold and meet or exceed the standards I set and agree with them on.…

Pastor Dr. Stacy Spencer reminds us every class that “all of us have room and that’s room for improvement”. I believe this with everything in side of me which calls my attention to the five areas of Exemplary Leadership. Within those areas of leadership there is one area that I may focus on and pay close attention to as I am developed into a great leader. There are other areas that I have to improve in and continue to sharpen my tools, but this area requires the most attention. When it comes to the area of “Challenge the Process” this is my weakest area in the Exemplary Leadership Module. This area is the weakest because when operating in this area you have to make moves and take risk. I understand that God has not given us the spirit of fear…

My personal inference about the purpose of this class is to build the leaders of tomorrow. This is done by putting forward the Relational Leadership Model forward. The class teaches us include this model in our philosophy of leadership. This class surely tests our limits by throwing challenges which are out of our comfort zones. We are expected to conquer these challenges which later develops our own confidence. Being assigned activities develops teamwork skills which is necessary for a leader. We will learn from others in our teams and boost each other’s confidence. The class also focuses on public speaking and expression of thoughts. I have seen many people who have leadership qualities but are shy to come up front. This class…

Being a leader is more than simply holding a leadership position or having the ability to lead. Everyone is capable of being a leader, but not everyone exercises his or her leadership abilities. Each person’s idea of leadership is different. My idea of leadership has developed over time, and being a member of the President’s Leadership Class has helped me develop my philosophy of leadership further than what it was two months ago. My personal philosophy of leadership is the ability to effect change through leading by example, taking initiative, and encouraging others.…

The most significant lesson that had an impact on me this week was the second half of the Emergent Leadership Issues lesson. Breaking into groups to go over different emergent leadership issues from subordinate/supervisor perspectives was an eye-opening experience. This lesson is also where I had my “aha” moment. I was up first to play the supervisor role for stress management and was flipping through pages of the student guide to find instructions or steps that would help me communicate with my subordinate. My “aha” moment was when I realized that there are no exact guidelines on how to talk to a subordinate about difficult topics and that I must rely on open communication and my knowledge of resources to effectively be there for my airman. This has changed my problem solving skills because now I have to rely on my subordinate to provide me with enough information to make the proper choice. I must create that trusting relationship if I want them to open up enough to provide that information instead of relying solely on my own knowledge. I realized that there will not always be an official form like the ACA to deal with unexpected situations when it comes to being a supervisor. With this new knowledge, I plan on changing my behavior by becoming more confident in my answers to my subordinates instead of being insecure and relying so heavily…

But, I’m only going to go into detail on one. I was an emerging leader, and it was a class that you apply to take when you’re going into your sophomore year, and was aimed at bringing together a diverse array of leaders from all types of organizations on campus. The class was directed by my school’s head of the Center for Leadership & Service department and she certainly is great at her job. Every class was different and unique. Some were aimed at a different way to look at the world, those around you, the way others think, the way others are treated in society, and a wide array of popular leadership theories and insights into how to inspire others and yourself. I still remember what my class came up as our definition of what leadership is to us and it still applies to me today. It was, “Leadership is a continuous developmental process towards the growth of oneself and those around them.” I like the idea of trying to have the mentality of always choosing the positive option in life. This, and the other leadership experience’s I have had are some of the few experiences that I have walked away truly feeling like I grew as a person, taking away with me both new knowledge and leadership skills that will dramatically help me handle the daily struggles that the professional world offers. The leadership programs I attended set a catalyst to my interest in people…
