Reflective Essay
REFLECTION ONE
The purpose of this essay is to reflect on the assessment conducted on a student who was doing a case study. I will use a reflective model to discuss how am achieving the necessary level of competence in my nursing profession as an assessor and as am preparing my self to the role of a preceptor. The reflective model I have chosen to use is Gibbs model (Gibbs 1988). This model provides structure for reflection on a nursing experience or situation as it follows the six distinct stages thus; description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and action plan.
For the purpose of reflection, the reflection may be written in the first person. In accordance with the nurses and midwives council of Malawi code of professional conduct, confidentiality shall be maintained and all names have been changed to protect identity. Therefore, the student will be called Charity, patient Mary and my fellow assessor Mrs. Tawo.
Doing a case study is one of the requirements for second year students for them to proceed to the next level. Case study gives a student chance to present a health care problem. The student was supposed to interview the patient and take a detailed and focused history as well as perform a physical exam so as to identify the patient problems and how they will be managed.
I was asked by the student to assess her on the patient she identified. I had done this before on almost five students in the presence of their clinical facilitator. As an assessor, my duty was to evaluate whether he student is able to use and transfer the theoretical knowledge to skills as supported by Benjamin Bloom (1956) in his taxonomy of learning theory. For the assessment to be objective, two assessors must be present, so Mrs. Tawo who was the student instructor joined me.
The student set all the necessary materials for the assessment. Consent was sort from the patient and significant others. I and my fellow assessor were also ready with our assessment tools in hands
