Reflective Account On Y Learning
I was a volunteer for the YMCA at Underwood Elementary School. Here, I tutored students in a variety of subjects at an after school program, Y Learning. My role was to assist students to reach school-system benchmarks and to develop their confidence inside and outside of the classroom. I collaborated and communicated with both staff and students to achieve our goals. Through talking with students, I was able to learn how to best give them individualized assistance in order for them to

Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…

I am Ethan Ritz and a current 9th grader at Milken. For Service Learning this year, I was a Counselor in Training at Camp VBS for two weeks of the summer. A meaningful experience I had while being a CIT was playing with the kids in the pool. They loved the attention and the activities we played. I would give them a piggy back ride around the pool and if they wanted would throw them in the air. This always put a huge smile on their faces. One kid even said, “That was awesome!” when I threw him in the air. I loved making each kids day at camp even better.…

Thirty of those fifty service hours are a mandatory aspect of the junior year curriculum and must involve work with either the poor or marginalized. Personally, I chose to complete my necessary hours with the organization Outdoors for All, specifically working with the marginalized. Outdoors for All (OFA) strives to enrich the quality of life for children and adults with disabilities through outdoor recreation by offering programs just as skiing, kayaking, and biking. I participated in their downhill ski program, teaching lessons to people ranging from four to thirty-five years old with a vast array of both mental and physical disabilities. Volunteering with OFA improved not only my teaching skills but my ability to work with all people regardless of their…

For instance, in the spring 2016 semester I volunteered with the American Red Cross and I encouraged other residents to volunteer as a community service program. Another program that I executed was titled, "Can you survive?" The program took place around Halloween, so I included a mysterious theme to make it more entertaining for residents. The program consisted of deadly scenarios (i.e. the zombie apocalypse and a plane crash) to teach residents how to effectively work together. This program, and several of the other educational programs I facilitated, let residents learn in a fun and educational setting. Through these programs I developed strong and amicable relationships with residents, which helped me to better assist them when they were…

In order to apply for National Spanish Honors Society (NSHS) last year, I was required to compile several service hours in which I had to help others through Spanish. I decided to tutor my fellow classmates and even teach them some concepts they were very unsure about. Through tutoring for several weeks I was able to attain all of my minutes but I was also able to help others understand the language better. I am also in the process of applying this year for NSHS, and I plan on tutoring and volunteering once more.…

The third program I helped with was a soccer tournament that my fellow Bhutanese immigrants organized between teams from other states. As I volunteered there, I helped prepare food for the players, I picked up the trash, and I gave water to the players after the game. The purpose of the soccer tournament was to have fun and enjoy playing sports. I would like to join a soccer team when I go to high school. In the future, I would like to volunteer in a program that helps people who are facing cancer.…

I have enjoyed tutoring students through the Literacy Corps for nearly two years. The program has helped push me outside of my comfort zone by leading and teaching students. Without challenging myself, I would never have been able to establish a connection with the many students and teachers in the Syracuse area that I have today. I greatly value these connections and relationships, which have helped further my learning experience in college.…

Throughout high school, I was involved in multiple extracurricular activities, including, but not limited to, Friends of Rachel and Desert Vista Peer Tutoring (DVPT). During my time as the secretary of Friends of Rachel, I managed all the attendance and arranged all meeting times for the club. I especially enjoyed being the receptionist for Friends of Rachel because through my tasks, I was able to develop my organizational and planning skills. Meanwhile, during the two days per week I spent at DVPT, I tutored hundreds of students in subjects ranging from mathematics, science, history, English, and Spanish. I, also, took on the role of receptionist for DVPT where I facilitated the entire tutoring center by pairing tutors and tutees, marking…

Through the course of five weeks I have tutored a third grader by the name of Willy one hour each Thursday. Willy is a high-spirited kid who loves to learn. He goes to a school named Corpus Christi, a school I spent my sixth through eighth grade years at, and is also the organization I volunteered for. I chose this particular work because I love working with kids considering I have 4 younger brothers and sisters. This also gave me an opportunity to put my knowledge to good use and to be a good role-model towards Willy. What I gained from this experience is satisfaction from helping a young student cope with his academic struggles and learn to surpass them in order to be successful. I most definitely would do this project again if I had the chance.…

Exemplar service programs that I contributed to were Swing for Laurie’s Kids, a tennis program intended for people with a mental handicap; as well as Top Soccer, a soccer camp for individuals with a mental impairment. Athletically, I have counseled my tennis coach with player placement, in addition to being a judge at a cross-fit competition known as the Battle of the Boxes. At school, I undertake the task of managing the library, and actively assist with student council projects such as: collecting donations for servicemen, wrapping shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child, and placing and removing homecoming decorations.…

One of my most meaningful service opportunities was volunteering in the Utah Special Olympics last June. I spent the morning and early afternoon managing the Track and Field events of the Summer Games with friends and leaders from my church. This experience gave me a welcome change of perspective and an opportunity to focus on something greater than myself. On this day, I had the privilege of spending time with some of the kindest people I have ever met.…
