Reconstructing Amelia Self Vs Self Analysis
Conflict is the battle between what you feel and what you know, forcing you to create arguments in your mind, with others and with society. In Reconstructing Amelia self versus self is a big conflict in the aspects of suicide and decision-making, character versus character conflicts between friends and leaders, and lastly character versus society becomes a conflict of what is acceptable. Amelia is a fifteen-year-old girl who, throughout her telling her story before proclaimed “suicide” is offered to join a club. In this club, hazing is the only way members are allowed to get in. many occasions happen in the hazing, such as pranking teachers, but the one that Amelia has self conflict with is taking scandalous pictures and posting them online. She stays in the club to be with a girl in it: “Dylan might feel judged if I didn’t post my pictures, too. What if she didn’t want to be with me anymore because f it? (McCreight 200).” Throughout the hazing, Amelia fights with herself to try to do the right thing while still keeping the girl that she loves. Because of the group (the Magpies) that Amelia is converging herself into, she finds herself having conflict with her best friends and the leaders of the Magpies. First are Amelia’s actions towards a teacher, ziptying his bag to his desk, making him throw out his back. It is knowledge in the school who the grous are, and even the headmaster tries to direct her away from them: “Anyways, I just wanted to say that the magpies are not the answer (McCreight 105).” The second is that she is supposedly caught cheating on a paper. This paper was one on a book that she has read over ten times, making it unnecessary for he to need to cheat, but because she was found doing so, people believe that is why she killed herself.
