Reasons Why Students Attend College
A students’ motive to attend college has been a changing landscape since its inception. Prior to World War II, students primarily attended college to develop a meaningful philosophy of life and for the enjoyment of learning, (Bennett & Shayner, 1988). However, the fluctuation in socioeconomic status and societal problems has caused the motivation to seek a higher education to shift. Students have become more interested in gaining higher earning power and to clean up the problems created during the baby-boomer years, (Levine & Cureton, 1998). According to, The American Freshman: Thirty Year Trends, the top cited reasons as of 1996 to attend college was to get a better job, (Sax, Astin, Korn & Mahoney, 1998).
