Reading Response Essay: What Is Failure?
“The best way to measure your progress at something is the number of setbacks and “failures” you’ve had.” (Tracy). Failure is a good thing is consistently about how failure isn’t always a bad thing and failure is how we learn. Failure is experienced every day from many people and they think if they fail they think it’s not good. Some concepts that were picked out were writer’s voice, the reading response, and word complexity. The author’s voice in the reading, overall gives the reader a shocking factor and makes me think more. There was a moment in the reading were it was very abrupt. “I was lying. What I actually wish for her is failure.” (Caroll). For instance there was some wittiness that I spotted in this reading. “If you’ve spent enough time in the kitchen to have broken a lot of pots, probably you know a fair amount about cooking.” (Caroll). Tolerance was also used in this passage, it kind of surprised me a little bit. “Each week I am aware that one column is going to be the worst column of the week.” (Caroll). …show more content…
I felt many things while reading this passage. I was shocked at times and other times I was surprised. Success isn’t required the first time around. “First-time failure, by contrast, is expected; it is the natural order of things.” (Caroll). Public embarrassment to feed your soul kind of surprises me because most people don’t want to embarrass themselves. “She risked failure and profound public embarrassment in order to feed her soul. (Caroll). Why wouldn’t you tell someone that failure is a good thing? Telling someone failure is good could actually help them. “I probably won’t tell her that failure is a good thing, because that’s not a lesson you can learn when you’re five.”

When the author used tone as one of his rhetorical devices I was intrigued. Like when passage said "Anything to declare? Cigarettes?..." the characters seemed very serious, and kind of just making jokes at the same time, which kind of humorous. I guess the author used to make a bit entertaining as the story goes on.…

For some people it takes forever to figure out that failure is not always a bad thing, while at the time it may seem like the end of the world. “We are all potentially capable of any human act.” (Roth 39). Even the most successful of people have failed at something at least once in their lives. Maybe consider though, that failure was what brought them back up to the best, hardest working person that they could be and it did not take long for them to retrieve what they had lost and made it ten times better!…

Success is to achieve something that we truly long for. “Sometimes failure is more beneficial than success.” Written by Darren Roberts. This is a very inspiring quote for all species of mankind. I agree rightfully with this quote as it states that even sometimes there are ups and downs, falls and disruptions in life, but those problems make us even stronger and prevent us from making the same mistake and make us more successful in life. Although, if losing things sometimes make us closer to something we want, we must make a go for it. As In Homers’, The Odyssey, and Nancy’s’, The House of The Scorpion, the main characters deal with personal loss and face many hardships, but finally reach to their own respected homes and families, safe and soundly.…

A constant stream of problems will always arise and taking the necessary precautions and having strong problem solving skills are essential to the success of improving a distributed system from any type of failure. We will discuss four types of failures that may occur within a distributed system and discuss the proper way of addressing them. The narrator of the text I speak of is William K. Zinsser. This man discusses how in America, we have a right that is supposed to be known, but isn’t so much, and that is the right to fail. This article is called, “The Right to Fail.” I do not know exactly the time exactly when this article came to be, but my guess is that this text came out when everyone did not believe in failure. In my opinion, the audience intended for this article is for all the people. I believe he wants to show not just some people, but many people from everywhere, that it is more than ok to fail some time in your life. The main idea of this piece is to let everyone know that failing is a part of being a human. I say this because in the text Zinnser says, “Success can be dangerous, you feel you know it all.” And like he says, success can be dangerous because you will not only hurt yourself, but others as well because you think you will never be wrong. The tone that he shows is pride in telling people to go ahead and fail, Because when you fail, you’ll get back up, know what to do, and succeed…

Failure is something no one likes. I have learned over the years that failure is perceived as a bad thing. No one ever told me failure could be taken as a good thing. That was until I read a story in This I Believe II. The author explained why he liked failure and why failure could be a good thing. Forgiveness is something everyone should learn. Many people in our lives may do wrong to us and if we hold on to the hurt and anger we will never find happiness. I was one of those people who could hold a grudge forever, and then I realized that being happy was more important to me so I learned forgiveness (mainly with a little help). When I read a story in This I Believe II I realized the author had a life very similar to mine. It help me appreciate learning forgiveness.…

When you look someone rich or famous you automatically assume that they are successful. However, this is only an outward appearance. Most of the time these “famous” people are stressed way beyond what is noticed by the public. They are not truly happy because they are way too concerned with the way they live their lives since people are constantly watching their every move. The true meaning of success is to have “a good result, happy outcome” (“Success”). Estee Lauder once said, “I never dreamt about success, I worked for it.” Success is setting a personal goal and working hard toward it, and ultimately your hard work and dedication leads to a favorable outcome.…

Failure is not something an individual can avoid. We all make mistakes because we are imperfect. Thus, we need to look at ways that help us overcome a situation we had failed at. According to “Rich in Thought: Not every Olympian Gets a Medal” by Richard Paloma, he states,” Mistakes are tools for learning- not indicators of poor ability” (paragraph 7). Whether it’s losing a soccer game, failing a test, or coming last in a race we all have failures. Three ways that I have made a mistake, but learned from it are failure’s on a school history final, the loss of my soccer game, and stealing from Target.…
