Reaction to Raisin in the Sun/Dream Defered
Journal – A Raisin in the Sun/ A Dream Deferred

This poem resonated with me more so than any other so far. It starts out with a simple question about a dream that gets put off and the raisin is a metaphor for the dream or idea that is perished in the blazing sun. The writer uses such vocabulary to ignite all senses to describe the raisin as decaying, festering and stink like rotten meat.
IT seems as so the dream is the source of pain for the writer and the ills that accompany the chasing of the dream are pain, anguish and torture. The use of the sun I found to be significant as the sun is the source of all life and covers the whole world and to the individual, the raisin, it causes an unbearable torment. The dream in this poem is not indicated but given the context of the writer I assumed it could be used to explain what we know to be the American Dream where a man can be happy and enjoy life in his own home away from persecution of society. I would compare that that the pain in this poem like the sores and heavy load are the day to day hardships he faces to achieve his dreams.
The last line is significant as along with the other lines in the poem he poses questions but this last line is terminal. There are no more transformations the dream can do but to explode and be destroyed completely. This suggests either he gives up or the things that keep him from achieving his dreams causes him to break down and crack mentally perhaps.

In “A Raisin in the Sun” we see a typical African American Family with each member having their own dreams and ideas of what they want out of life. They each chase what they believe to be a “way out” for them and take steps to get there. What keeps this family from achieving them are hardships like lack of money, lack of support and resources that perhaps non-African Americans have.
The play depicted the everyday life of African Americans in a way that all cultures can understand. The resemblance to actual people

In the article , “The art of social Criticism : Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the sun ,” the author states that this play was written for those African American families and their struggles to be able to get out of the ghetto on Chicago’s South Side. Lorraine took every chance to engage herself in her everyday life and her literary work being a writer and a student. African Americans were placed in the lower class while some other families were middle class but still placed in the lower class like Lorraine and her family. Even though Lorraine was placed in the lower class that did not affect her , her privilege still did not insulate her from the struggles and anger she was facing. Basically the the reality of the play is the realization…

In Lorraine Hansberry’s play, “A Raisin in the Sun,” she does a great job of intertwining Langston Hughes’ poem “Montage of a Dream Deferred,” to incorporate her underlying theme of dreams. In his poem, Hughes asks "What happens to a dream deferred?" and then goes on to list the different things that might happen to a person if his dreams are put "on hold." His overall point is that whatever happens to a postponed dream is never positive. Meanwhile, the question Hansberry poses in her play is, "What happens to a person whose dreams grow more and more passionate — while his hopes of ever achieving those dreams grow dimmer each day?" Dreams get put on hold for many different reasons but in the case of the Youngers, it was their home environment that ensured that none of them would be able to accomplish their ultimate dreams.…

Some people have the opportunity and easier access to make the American dream a reality, for others it remains just a dream. A dream that is deferred by many obstacles and such. In every family, each member has their own role to play. Whether it is the supporter, the dreamer, the realist, the dominant and strong head of the family, from birth we are each given a place to fill in our family. The problem comes when we don’t know how to live in our place. Then a person gets lost trying to fill another role because they are not satisfied with where they are. The characters in A Raisin in the Sun are members of a family that have to deal with a member who no longer knows his place in the family and goes on a personal journey to find one. The play’s main character, Walter Lee Younger, is struggling with his identity. Thrashing around drowning in the shortcomings of his life. His main focus throughout the play is getting money. From the opening scenes we see that that seems to be his driving force. The whole family is used to it and even annoyed as whenever he begins to talk about the insurance check or his new idea on how they could earn some great money, everyone brushes him off and tells him to stop thinking about money all the time. Walter Lee can’t stop thinking about money because he feels like a failure, but if his plans worked out he would be rich and that equals success in his eyes. He works a dead end job as a chauffer for a wealthy white family but he has no education, no status, and no money, to help him succeed. He dreams a big dream of putting pearls on his wife’s neck and being able to give his child, Travis, everything he himself was not able to have. Now, this is a dream most parents have for their families. Who would not want to be able to support their families and never have to see their children struggling? My parents have worked long and hard for their whole lives to give my sister and myself a better life so that we would never have to see the poverty they endured. My mother speaks to me all the time about the projects she grew up in and how she and my grandmother had to share a bedroom, just like Benetha and Lena Younger,…

In the poem Langston Hughes states “Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?” A dream full of potential and hope becomes worthless in a matter of minutes, just like a raisin drying up in the sun. The readers can visualize the raisin drying up in the sun, by using that comparison Hughes allows readers to understand that the dream, once so full of hope, is never going to happen. Hughes also says “Maybe it sages - like a heavy load?” Hughes now allows the readers to understand that the dream has now become a burden to the dreamer. Readers envision the dream sagging low and aggravating the dreamer. Because of the displeasure the the dream causes the dreamer, the readers can infer the dream will never come…

The composer conveys a strong feeling of grief and pain in the poem. The composer creates an empathy towards the widower, by expressing just how lonely he feels after his wife had died, and he had to stay in the place that they had shared together. Through the use of multiple metaphors, "The Christmas paddocks aching in the heat/The windless trees, the nettles in the yard" , the composer builds a path into how the widower is 'aching' after the grief of losing his wife. 'windless trees' implies the feeling of death, as the trees have no leaves, whilst 'nettles' evokes the pain and burning he is feeling at this difficult time. The reader realises that this might be a difficult time for the widower, and empathises to attempt to feel what he feels.…

Also, In the beginning of the poem, Hughes uses visual imaging/similes to compare a 'dream deferred' to a raisin. "Does it [the dream] dry up/Like a raisin in the sun?". The once raisin healthy looking grape, has shriveled up to become a raisin. The question remains, why compare a 'dream deferred' to a raisin? For one, the appearance of the raisin isn't emphasized, so the description isn't as significant as the simile. What Hughes is attempting to communicate is that like a raisin, a dream deferred shrivels up and turns dark because the sun has baked it (negative connotation). The comparison of the dream to a withered raisin emphasizes how a dream that is postponed changes dramatically and will not turn out as the person originally intended.…

“Strange Fruit” is formed by three short verses that all use ironic and understated language that forces the reader to dig deeper into history and discover what this “Strange Fruit” really is. This poem follows a lyric pattern, expressing deep thoughts and emotions about the lynching in the South. An elegiac pattern can also be extracted from this poem due to its commemoration to those strange fruit that died as a direct effect of lynching. A rhyme scheme of A,A, B, B, C,C, D, D, E, E, F, F is followed allowing the steady repetition of sounds to create a taunting beat. The melody is slow and conveys a melancholy…

what I thought was intriguing about this poem is each stanza starts with a similie like does it stink like rotten meat? and the poem also uses a lot of imagery and makes the peom have a certain feeling to it. when the author use rotten meat it has a negative connotation to it being that it is like the whole theme of the story which is a a dream that is being held back, the author Hughes also makes the reader think more through the use of analogies like does it dry up? or do fester like a sore? which is basically give way to a suggestion as to what can happen with a dream and hughes is suggesting that dreams that are not fulfilled or accomplished can make someone who is trying to see them come true become very bitter and angry at the fact making their life very difficult and is mainly targeting minorioties at a time in America where there was a senses of hoplesness for them and basically giving the reader a insight as to how people at athat time felt, and how it created what many are today due to the fact of injustice and discrimination by white people and the affect that it had on their lives and how it would continue to affect their…

“Weariness has, in fact, won in this room. Everything has been polished, washed, sat on, used, scrubbed too often. All pretenses but living itself have long since vanished from the very atmosphere of this room.”(23-24) A Raisin in the Sun is a play of dependency, where events are dependent on one other events. Monetarily, the Youngers depend on the insurance check to rescue them from the weariness and familiarity of their one room apartment. Between all the talk about money, though, the fight for the characters to stick to their values remains. Finally, the aspirations of the characters, which depend on the check and the characters self-integrity, make the text what it is; an experimentation as to what actually happens to a dream differed. Three words that best describe and embody this play are credibility, self-integrity and that of ambitions.…
