Re-Civilize Yourself Businesses often seek to present a certain “brand” or “look,” and may hire only people who fit in. Some businesses can also impose grooming requirements that restrict self-expression and can sometimes hold men and women to different standards. Some people may think that most of Nivea's skin care products are for women, but they actually do have a line for men. Most of their advertising usually targets females, but in August 2011, they put out an offensive ad aimed at African American men in the men's magazine Esquire. Nivea must have a serious lack of diversity on their marketing team, because there is no other explanation for why an ad like this got approved. The ad by Nivea shows an African American man with short hair and a clean face, wearing a sweater and a button-up. He's winding up to hurl a mask portraying a black man with an afro and a beard. The caption reads "Look Like You Give A Damn. Re-civilize Yourself." This ad is aiming toward an audience of young African American men who probably struggle with individuality and peer approval. The ad is showing that having an afro and a beard as a Black person in the United States is uncivilized and looks as if you do not care which in a way is racist. The message seems pretty clear, natural hair on a black man isn't a style preference or an interest in afrocentrism, it's simply uncivilized. But how can they advertise that a certain look is uncivilized, and out of all the types of people they could have used, they used an African American. Also, who said that having a beard and an afro is saying that you don’t give a damn? Some young men think that having a beard may make them look more mature and older. Then again, the choice of words Nivea used, “Re-civilize” is controversial as it is. At the end of the day the company Nivea stated on their Facebook page, "Thank you for caring enough to give us your feedback about the recent 'Re-civilized' NIVEA FOR MEN ad. This ad was inappropriate

    This advertisement is for Armani Jeans. Armani is also very well known for his designer jeans. Armani is more expensive than Calvin Klein and is not worn by many people. Armani is directed toward the upper class and is known by his label for his prices. This ad shows a man standing outside presumably in the snow. He is not such a popular model but he still has an impact for the advertisement. He is featured wearing a black jean-jacket and a baseball cap with "AJ" and the symbol of the Armani bird.     The target market for this product is easily seen towards men however the visual aspects in the ad targets the female audience hoping to persuade them to get it for their man. The actor played in the ad is Isaiah Mustafa also known by woman as “the Man Your Man Could Smell Like” woman are attracted to there men being manly and Isaiah portrays it very well to get that point across.     Susan Bordo describes the ways men can alter an advertisement, and how the way they dress and behave in the advertisement can change the perception of them. Some advertisements that centers around men are used for the sole purpose of exuding sex appeal. Campaigns advertising products such as cologne and fashion use this approach abundantly, mainly to get people’s attention. When men are illustrated this way, it is much more controversial because men are perceived more in a feminine way. As Susan Bordo states, “It is feminine to be on display” (Bordo, 135). Males exuding femininity is not completely accepted in today’s culture because of the stereotype that men should be authoritative and burly men.     Unilever owns the Dove brand that was praised for uniquely marketing their skincare products. Dove created the “Real Beauty” marketing campaign that promised to “help real women reveal their own real beauty” and the Dove Self-Esteem Fund that promotes a “change in young girls’ attitudes about themselves” (Sheth, et. al, 2014, 95).     Within the African American community, there exists a notion of “good hair” and “bad hair”. This topic has historically ignited a great debate within the culture that has entrenched the community drawing no lines between gender, socioeconomic status, or age. To understand some of the dynamics of the hair debate it is important to comprehend the cultural relativism of the social facts and the belief held by the African America Diaspora. Cultural relativism is the idea that “something can be understood and judged only in relation to the cultural context in which it appears” (Andersen & Taylor, 2011, pg. 41). Social facts were described by Emile Durkheim as the “social patterns external to individuals, e.g. customs and social values” (Andersen & Taylor, 2011, pg. 14). To fully grasp the magnitude of the debate within the African American community we must understand two key sociological terms. The first term, impression management is the “process by which people control how others perceive them” (Anderson & Taylor, 2011, pg. 118).
