Leaders are motivators. In 1986 the Mets won 108 out of 162 games and the World Series although they were destined to fail. “’Thank God,’ says Hearn ‘for Mex’” (Pearlman 1). ‘Mex’ was Keith Hernandez, a veteran first baseman who had one World Series title under his belt. “Hernandez was the guy who paced the dugout while screaming at rival pitchers; it was Hernandez who advised Met relief pitchers about why the outside fastball would work better than the inside slider, and who set the ever important (yet oft-absent) positive tone.” (Pearlman 1) When you have a player, who never gives up, and is always pushing others, it makes their teammates want to win and play harder. In 2011 the Florida gators made it to the sweet 16 in the NCAA after having a few years of hard times. Chandler Parsons have played through it all. He was a key player in the team gaining their mojo back. His coach gave him the option to leave, or buy in. “He stayed and worked and got better. He got quicker and stronger and eliminated his…
The purpose of this paper is to professionally analyze a leader in order to identify how their attributes and competencies impacted their organization and affected my own leadership philosophy. Master Sergeant Retired Roy Benavidez is a leader whose actions positively influenced the United States Army and greatly influenced my leadership philosophy. Benavidez influenced the United States Army by aligning his core attributes, character, presence, and intellect and his core competencies, leads, develops, and achieves with Army doctrine before it existed. Benavidez’s leadership style and personal sacrifices…
This paper is a look at some of the leadership lessons I have learned from researching Tony Dungy. Included in the text is some information about Tony’s life, leadership traits, and how he went on to successfully impact many lives of others through his accomplishments as an NFL Coach and family man. I have taken the information I learned about Tony and have included some examples of how I have applied my leadership skills to my life situations. This paper focuses on three main areas in the paper, and from there added my real life experiences, followed by a conclusion.…
In figuring out who I wanted to write this paper on, many different leaders popped into my mind. I knew I wanted to choose a “sports figure” because playing sports has always been a huge part of my life. Every coach I have had, regardless of the sport, has always been a leader in my eyes so I thought it would be fitting to choose a coach. Coach Tony Dungy is said to be one of the greatest to ever coach the game of football. I would have to agree with that statement. I have been a fan of Tony Dungy ever since he became the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts in 2002. I look up to, and respect him as a coach and as a person. I wanted to write this paper about him in hopes of learning more about his leadership style and what he thinks it takes to be a leader. Since I aspire to be like him as a coach, I want to leave a lasting positive impression upon the young individuals that I teach. I believe that that is exactly what Tony Dungy did for all of the players he has coached. He used his abilities, skills, values, and ethics to inspire, motivate and coach his teams on to victory.…
Not everyone has it in them to be a great leader. Most people do, but do not accept the challenge. Some people may also believe that they are leaders but are not truly fit or put the position to lead in a way that would be aspiring to others. According to Mrs. Stephanie Fontenot, leadership is one of the most important aspects in the classroom and on the basketball court. As soon as she was asked the question,…
When you think about the Super Bowl what thoughts come to mind? You might think about parties, half time shows, or even commercials, but did you know that the Super Bowl trophy is named after Vince Lombardi? Today I am going to take you on a journey of why Coach Lombardi was a Visionary Leader. He took the worst team in the league and turned them into champions by using his methodical patterns by going above and beyond to know all aspects of his football team. He watched every play and analyzed each player to know their strengths and weaknesses. Next, he used inspirational motivation to get buy-in from his players, coaches, and fans based on his vision to win. Furthermore, I will discuss how he was an Ethical Leader. Coach Lombardi had competing values based off of his Catholic values, but he had openly gay players on his team. Moreover, he used intellectual…
Many people remember Pat Tillman as being determined. Tillman exhibited this quality by telling his Arizona State University football coach, he would be playing there for four years and then he would be either playing in the NFL or working. In addition, he strongly desired to make it to the NFL even though he wasn’t…
Vince Lombardi is one of football’s greatest leaders of all time and had a natural ability to lead inside him that was exposed throughout his lifelong bond with football. Vince Lombardi was a leader unlike any other. After his only postseason loss in 1959 Lombardi swore to his team that they would never lose a championship game again and the Packers never did under his watch. Vince Lombardi always had the right things to say to his players in any situation and that’s what made him great. “Winning is not a sometime thing, it’s an all the time thing. You don’t win once in a while; you don’t do things right once in a while; you do them right all of the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing”1. Vince Lombardi knew that the key to being a winner was inside all of his players. Every man on the roster was capable of being a winner just some did not know it. Lombardi led with such confidence his players and the people around him soaked up some of it. Lombardi’s style of inspiring other was unique especially in the coaching world. Whereas most coaches would beat their players down to try and get in their head, Vince Lombardi would coach his players and show them how to win. Vince Lombardi also played no favorites and for that he was also praised. Whoever was the best player would play no matter if he was a high paid star or just a hardworking player in practice who never gave up. Lombardi instilled the mindset into his players that winning was their only option and they were either champions or losers. The players looked up to Vince Lombardi so much that he was rarely questioned and they would do whatever he asked because he has earned their complete trust. This was essential in becoming the leader he wanted to be. Trust is a very precious thing that can be ruined easily. A common phrase football coaches say is, all I want is all you got, this means the coach simply wants your complete and total effort and he will take you to the championship. The players…
My first experience as a leader was during my final season on the Saint Demetrios Men’s Basketball Team. Since I was one of the better senior members on the team I became a captain. I learned to effectively communicate the player’s wishes and concerns to the…
A leader is a person who has the ability to lead or command an entire group of people, a leader is someone who is followed by other people. Being a leader is a wonderful privilege, it is something that is not necessarily handed to an individual nor is it something that can be bought, leadership is something that is earned. This entire course we have been learning about and discussing various characteristics of effective leaders. Some of those characteristics included confidence, charisma, courage, heart, perseverance, and among many others. This paper will focus primarily on one individual who exemplifies these traits and many other characteristics which contributes greatly to his success as a leader. The person that has been selected for the basis of this paper is Ray Lewis, a twelve year pro-bowl selection linebacker from the Baltimore Ravens. The reason I have chosen Lewis for this paper is because of the qualities he has as a leader not only on the playing field, but off of it as well. He is what I believe to be the best and most motivational and inspirational player in the National Football League today, maybe even all sports. The object of this paper is to elaborate on Lewis' characteristics and provide an explanation of his leadership style and why they are effective. This paper will begin by giving an in depth analysis of Ray. After the analysis it will then move into discussing Ray's styles of leadership. After talking about Lewis' styles it will then begin going through all his characteristics as a leader and what makes him stand out as a leader, in other words, I will explain why Ray Lewis is such a powerful and effective leader and the reason he stands out to people other than his organization.…
Vince Lombardi, head coach of the Green Bay Packers during the 1960’s, stated, “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence”. This holds true for many aspects of life, whether it be writing an essay for an English class, maintaining an image in society, or progressing a career, quality of life is a constant struggle. As humans, we are constantly evolving and making changes, most of them to supplement society. The need to be strive for greatness is thrumming vibrantly, deep inside the chest. There are some that achieve more than others, labelling themselves as leaders, more prominent members of society, individuals of inspiration for others to look up to. Two certain people who have demonstrated excellence by going above and beyond medial, mediocre measures, showcasing greatness throughout everyday situations, and are well-deserving of a blue ribbon, are Keaton Shumard and Aaron Jones.…

What do you consider a leader? Is it someone who can lead a group of people with no trouble or is it simply someone with exquisite thinking skills? There is not an accurate definition explaining who or what a leader is because each is different. I feel that Martin Luther King Jr is a great example because he has the ability to inspire people, which led to a movement that forever changed America. This paper goes into detail of things accomplished by Martin Luther King Jr, which allowed him to be considered one of the most influential leaders of our time.…
Leadership is a prized commodity, however, it is not one that has always come naturally to me. I was a rather quiet kid growing up, and so I rarely let my voice be heard while I was at school. Despite my timid nature, I was able to develop enough self-confidence to open up to others and share my feelings through baseball. Baseball is truly a team sport, requiring constant communication and trust between teammates. As such, the close companionship I held with my team mates created the ideal environment for me to develop my leadership skills. Base running was always my strongest skill, so I constantly found myself teaching my teammates how to gain the advantage. I became the unofficial base running coach year after year, even as the teams changed…
Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “The ultimate measure of man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” In my opinion, this quote reflects the author’s point of view in the document “The Penalty of Leadership.” The author points out in the beginning of the article that being a leader in whatever you choose to be can have its benefits, but there is also bound to be abuse and rejection coming from the opposition. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the author of this document were stating that when everything is right in the world, it is simple to stand at the front and take responsibility. However, the tricky part to being a leader is seeing how you will respond when the whole world seems to be against your cause. There are several examples over the past few years that suggests the “penalty” of leadership not only exists in political, entertainment, and business situations, but also in the sport and recreation professions in both the present and for the future.…
