My Rant on Bandwagon Fans
By: Jack Byrnes
You know what really tears my ACL? Bandwagons fans. If you don’t know what a bandwagon fan is, they’re anyone who claims they are a "fan" of a particular sports team, even though they had no prior support for/interest in the team until that team started winning. These types of fans only show playoff interest, have probably never watched a regular season game, don't own any type of team merchandise, nor would they buy any. For example, a lot of people were bandwagon fans during the years of 2010 to 2013 when LeBron James and Chris Bosh joined the Miami Heat basketball association. People only liked them when they were good. Now that LeBron has joined the Cleveland Cavaliers, all of those bandwagon fans and many more have now just happened to like that team, even though they were a very bad team the past few years. This doesn’t only apply for just basketball, but for all sports. You have your Green Bay Packers bandwagon fans, your Los Angeles Angels bandwagon fans, even your Rory McIlroy bandwagon fans.
It aggravates me especially when the bandwagoners talk about how good “their” team is. It makes me wanna fight them, but instead I just ask them to name how long they were fans of that team and if they can name me that team’s roster or record before they were good. Usually I get the replies of “It doesn’t matter, we’re good now.” or “You’re just asking that because my team is better than yours.” Well of course your team is probably better than mine, but at least I’m a loyal member to my team win or lose. I remember going onto Twitter and reading some guy say “It was a nice few years being a Miami heat fan, now Imma go look for the next best team to like.” No, I didn’t paraphrase that. He actually did say that statement word for word. Don’t get me wrong, there are loyal fans that have liked them before they were good, and then that team became good, but those are very rare occurrences nowadays. I can relate in that I’m a

In case you haven't heard, one of the best basketball players on the globe had a one hour special to announce his free agency decision in the summer of 2010. LeBron James went on ESPN on July 8th to tell the basketball world he was taking his talents to south beach to join the Miami Heat. “The Decision” as it became know, brought LeBron quite a bit of hate not only from fans from Cleveland (the team he was previously on) but from fans all around the league and even some players. The main reason for this is because he was viewed as selfish and egotistical in making a one hour special just to tell people where he was going to play basketball next season. Most people see the surface of the situation but don’t take into account everything that went on outside the publics focus. Even events like this have a lot going on in the background that the sports industry should take a look at.…

People recognise Lebron James as not only a legendary basketball player, but also an expert wordsmith. As Lebron left his home of Cleveland with the promise of fame and fortune in the land of the Miami Heat, he betrayed his hometown. Many expressed outrage about his betrayal and found themselves offended by his very name. People met the sudden switch from Miami and back to Cleveland with much anger and controversy from both cities. People threw rumors and hateful words his way. Surrounded by all of the anger, Lebron released a beautifully crafted essay using strong rhetoric to shield himself from the blows. After this essay was released, those who had assaulted him began to follow and to support his decision. Many find it difficult to win the hearts of those who feel wronged. Yet with careful diction and presumably honest emotions and truths, it can be done. Lebron did just that.…

    Racism In The Nba

The National Basketball Association, formed in 1949, has grown from an unknown 11-team league formed by hockey team owners for an unpopular sport, to one of the most popular sports ever in a league of 30 different teams that can be followed year-round. It is also not only amazing how the league has grown, but how it has helped black people become accepted in the North American media. While people still believe that racism is a problem in the NBA, racism in the NBA is disappearing because there are better relationships between players and owners, there is more equality in NBA front offices, and black NBA players have better lifestyles off the court.…

I am a huge college and NBA basketball fan like millions of other Americans. I love to watch my favorite college players go to the NBA and follow their career. The NBA has allowed high school basketball players to choose if they want to go directly to the NBA or go to college since 1971. In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s it became more common for high school players like Lebron James, Kevin Garnett , and many other players choose to skip college and go directly into the NBA. Many people wanted a change in the rule, because they though the teenage players were too young, immature, emotionally and physically not ready to be in the NBA. In 2005, the NBA commissioner David Stern changed the rule and made it mandatory for US born high school players to be at least nineteen years old or one year removed from high school before entering the NBA draft. The rule basically raised the age limit to enter the NBA the rule would become known as the “one and done rule”. The rule change has had many positive and negative effects on the sport of basketball, colleges, coaches and players and become controversial.…

Before they appeared on national television playing for thousands of adoring fans, the majority of professional athletes started off at some point as wide-eyed, college freshman recruits, eager to bring glory to their school and to themselves. The hierarchy was set. Starting off at the bottom of the totem pole, they knew that the only way to gain any kind of playing time was to work hard day in and day out, during every practice. Sure enough, the rookie freshman became the All-Star senior who led his school to a championship season. This triumphant story of amateurism resonates in almost every university team’s locker room. Today, however, a hotly debated issue in the National Collegiate Athletic Association threatens to change the very essence of what makes college sports what they are.…

People tend to root for and want to like a team who is favored to win. For example, The Chicago Bulls in the 1990’s had a huge following because they were favored to win the championship so often. I have been on the winning side and beat a team in lacrosse twenty six to zero in the championship game of a tournament. Looking over at the opposing team's sideline, I was…

This also includes illegal acts. Fans stick up for their teams, no matter what; Such as believing anything they hear and only showing what they want seen. Which isn’t always the best idea. In SB Nation’s article, by Mike Rutherford, he explains how the Tar Heels sports teams are avoiding trouble by claiming that these “GPA booster” courses were offered to all students- not just athletes. Therefore, not getting the sports teams in as much trouble. This quotes explains deeper, “This was a scam that all students benefited from, not just the athletes enrolled in the classes. There was also significant evidence that the students enrolled in these classes at least had to turn in something before being awarded a grade…” (Par 5). Wow, is honestly all that comes into my head. I understand wanting good sports programs, but don’t those student- athletes want a good education as…

The National Collegiate Athletic Association is corrupted with sneakiness, unfairness and greediness, particularly in division one colleges. In North America, sports play a huge role, especially sports like football, hockey, basketball and baseball. Sometimes this causes us to become vanished of fairness, like are the players being treated right? A great example of injustice in sports is amateurism of football players in division one colleges. Division one and division two athletes must obtain amateurism, which is playing the sport as a hobby rather than for the money, many would define amateurism as worthy but it is really tainted and monopolized!…

Imagine being a college football star and finding out that a jersey representing your school with your name and number on the back is not only selling for $110 in stores nationally, but it is profiting higher than some professional sports jerseys. Now, imagine that you as that student-athlete will not be making a single penny off your institution using your name for monetary profit. Why you ask? Because according to the governing body of collegiate sports, the National Collegiate Athletic Association or NCAA, this would be considered an act that would bring an athlete out of his amateur status. Yet, it is okay to exploit that athlete’s talents as if he or she were a professional athlete and not compensate him or her. The NCAA started off as a small organization whose first objective was to solve an injury crisis in college football. However, with a growing governing power came more change.…

Currently, sports are clearly used for a business opportunity, not for the love of the game. Did you know that in 2011 the NCAA signed a 14-year contract with CBS and Time Warner Cable worth 10.8 billion dollars for just three weekends of men’s college basketball? The NCAA claims to be a non-profit association but they make an average of 11 billion dollars in annual revenue. Many people don’t realize the NCAA treats student-athletes like employees. College basketball and football players are often forced to miss classes to be on nationally televised productions and don’t receive any pay or compensation for missing classes multiple times a week to bring in revenue for the NCAA. For this reason and many others, student…

    Athletics Before Academics?

An anonymous individual once said, “People don’t play sports because it’s fun. Ask any athlete, most of them hate it, but they couldn’t imagine their life without it. It’s part of them, the love/hate relationship. It’s what they live for.” The quote continues saying, “It’s who they are. It’s who we are. We are athletes.” An athlete is an individual who trains to compete in a sporting event. However, there is a fine line distinguishing an athlete and a student athlete, or at least there should be. A student athlete, where student comes first and shows the balance of a full time student and a full time athlete, is an individual who competes in organized sports sponsored by an educational institution. Rephrase this for clarity…The majority of individuals are not able to continue their athleticism and their passion for their sport into college for at least four more years that they have played for many years beginning as young children, but those who are fortunate enough should not take it for granted. Colleges should have the same standards for their student athletes academically as they do for their non-athlete students. Colleges should not have exceptions and give their student athletes free hand outs, they should have strict rules and requirements, and colleges should set up tutors and extra help for their student athletes should they need it. Student athletes need to learn how to prioritize their “Three S’s,” study first, sports second, and their social life third. Colleges and universities should keep their standards just as high for student athletes than non-athlete students but Don’t use “in the end”… It’s a cliché…overall in the end it is the student athlete’s responsibility. The tensions between athletics and academics has flared and produced negative attitudes towards student athletes from professors and non-student athletes, due to…

Consumers are willing to pay billions and billions of dollars (repetition) yearly to show their passion and dedication towards their favorite sports teams. Many people pay for overpriced tickets and merchandise just to support their team, and will, however complain about the huge paychecks the athlete’s cash in at the end of the day. As long as consumers continue paying that much money for merchandise (alliteration) and games, the teams will continue making a lot of money and consequently the players will make even more. As a fan of the Chicago Bulls, a multi-million dollar franchise, I have spent a…

    Paying College Athletes

Year after year, they put the madness in March. They bring traditions unlike any others to the network every Saturday of fall. They make millions upon millions of dollars for their respective universities. Yet, today’s college athletes see absolutely none of that money. Rod Gilmore, a football analyst for ESPN, in the article, “College Football Players Deserve Pay for Play,” claims that athletes should have a share in money in this multibillion-dollar entertainment industry. In fact, if they are given some sort of payment or gift, they risk suspension, expulsion, or even punishment towards their university. If the NCAA would revise rules that were set decades ago so that they would apply to the collegiate athlete of today, many problems that exist would be solved.…
