Racism In Remember The Titans
The movie Remember the Titans is about a group of teenagers who go to a recently desegregated high school. The students join the football team and must overcome the racism that is present in 1970’s America. The main idea of this essay is the developing relationship between Gerry and Julius and how Gerry’s opinion of race changes throughout the movie. This is clear to the audience when the movie ends. Gerry and Julius’ relationship changes vastly throughout the movie. For example, during the start of the movie Gerry approaches Coach Boone and demands that spots be saved for white players, where as in the middle of the movie the team goes to a war memorial and relationships begin. Towards the end of the movie they become close friends referring to each as brothers.

This is the scene in which Gerry has an epiphany about how he acts towards the players on his team and people in general. The evidence is when Coach Boone makes the team run to the Gettysburg memorial to give them a speech about racism. This happens to occur after the scene where Julius responds to Gerry’s criticism with “Attitude reflects leadership”. This then leads up to his epiphany. It is clear to the audience that during these scenes Gerry’s opinion of race and relationship with Julius is changing. After the memorial scene is the next training session. This is when Gerry’s changed opinion is shown as he stops singling out the black players and treating the team as a whole. His friendship with Julius is also affected when it becomes less of a hateful relationship as they celebrate together after a successful block.
