Questions and Answers: Zappos
Zappos seems to be well positioned to have a competitive advantage over other online retailers. What challenges discussed in Chapter 1 pose the biggest threat to Zappos’ ability to maintain and enhance its competitive position? How can human resource management practices help Zappos meet these challenges?

To maintain and enhance its competitive position in the market, Zappos tries to achieve its goals by providing best online service to customers in terms of all the products they offer and by taking care of customer’s requirements. In order to provide best online service to its customers, they make sure that the items get delivered to customers on time. The company maintained its high position in the market and met all the challenges by monitoring its employee engagement, by sharing the knowledge among its employees, by creating continuous learning environment.

Human resource management helps Zappos to meet the challenges by giving rewards to employees for their performance, managers are asked to spend time with their employees, four weeks of training is provided to its employees including two weeks working on the phone, the company also provides free breakfast, snacks, lunch, coffee, tea etc.

Do you think that employees of Zappos have high levels of engagement? Why?

In my opinion, it is likely that employees are engaged; because of the creative ways that human resource management interviews and selects them.

Which of Zappos’ 10 core values do you believe that human resource practices can influence the most? The least? Why? For each of the core values, identify the HR practices that are related to it. Explain how each of the HR practice(s) you identified is related to the core values.

Delivering WOW service to the customers is one of the core values that human resource practices can influence the most. Because employees will only provide good services to the customers if they can provide correct information to the customers and make them happy. This core
